I've used 123-reg, part of Pipex, to buy domains in the past - very easy and reliable.

With one domain my ISP will host it free for email and a fairly basic website, but for anything more sophisticated you would need a host. The IT gurus on here will know about traffic and when you need your own server there.

Accounts were hacked and passwords had to be issued by post, still a great company and service

I must have been lucky because I bought domains for three or four companies and had no problems like that, though Streamline who host one of them had a big security scare pre-Christmas which gave us some problems with passwords being reset at short notice.
