I want to restore my cam cover and so far I've cleaned/degreased it and removed the old paint. Haven't decided on a colour yet but can anyone recommend a spray paint brand/type thats tough enough and whats the best way to bring up the unpainted aluminium part - not looking for a mirror polish but a smooth and even finish...???

I'm looking to do the same thing with mine
most refurbed ones I have found have been powder coated though,which is obviosly the best finish and most heat resistant.

I've been told that if you use 2k etching primer before you put your 2k top coat on the paint will resist cracking from the heat.
You will be able to get this from your local paint shop.

After its painted and your happy with it use a sanding block with very fine wet and dry paper to take the paint of the area around the writing.

 

Etch prime it, then go from there. Normal paint is fine.

I just painted the full thing and then went over the top part with 180, then 240, then 400 etc, then just polished it up with autosol and it looked fine.

I want to paint the area's that are either red/blue or green on all cosworth cam covers and leave the two flat area's in unfinished aluminium just as in the way they came from the factory. On mine at the moment the bare aluminium area's are a mulitude of grey shades and off white oxidation. Just wondering how to basically give these area's an even smooth finish but again not seeking a very shiney/mirror finish.

 

From factory they are fly cut or something i think mate, if it won't polish up the only way will be to flat the marks out and polish it
