Default development of cosworth lump

right me and a mate at work have had quite a long runing disagreement about what the cosworth lump was developed from!

mate said it is basically a pinto, i said not!

who is right? if it is how? and if it isnt whats it been developed from (if cosworth based it on anything when designing it)

The 16 valve head/turbo combination was originally an "in house"" Cosworth Engineering project..untill Ford boss was i'ts potential for motorsport - specifically touring car series.

Dont forget, we talking BLOCK ONLY and the word is DEVELOPED FROM, the old 205 cossie blocks basicly was hand picked Pintos, but all internals are totaly different, and later 200 blocks are NOT pinto blocks.

But yea, the cossie block originated from the Pinto block.

The HEAD is nothing to do with pintos at all, of course (but can be fitted to a pinto block)

1982 (year) YAA was a Cosworth financed 16V head on Ford T88/pinto block, no turbo - it was intended for TVR and aftermarket sales.

In 1984 ford comissioned the above engine with a turbo - Cosworth internal ref: YBB

I am led to believe the cosworth originally found that the engine in the spec requested was producing "more" than 200bhp, ford requested them to reduce this to below 200 for insurance/reliability reasons, this they could not achieve and the first cossies left the factory with a quoted 204bhp.

I heard the YB is a std 300hp engine, ford wanted it detuned and Cosworth made it 204hp as that was as low as it could go and still maintain a good idle speed.
