Car Started as this:




Pretty much a standard Series two with a few shiny bits.

Loved the car, using it daily up until about 18months ago. Unfortunately living near the coast and being 18 Years old the cursed rust/rot has got the better of it.
Decided to go bare shell and do a proper job first time, but we`ll see how that goes

Been following a couple of long term threads on here, Twins especially, motivated me to get on with mine. Spare time allowing, it might take a while but hey, it`ll get there.

The engine hasn`t run in so long it tried to fly off the minute the gearbox was removed,



stopped its bid to escape and bolted it down

 

Pulled out the interior,



How easy (or not!) is it to put the dash back in and not trap any of the wiring? Have a feeling that will be fun!

floorpans are pretty good. One small bit of rust near one of the seat mountings but better than expected.

The rest of the drivers side however is a different story. I will try and get better pics tomrrow but these just about show the problems.


Arch has rotted at every mounting point for the bodykit, guessing it had a wing change at some point


Nice hole in battery tray and firewall/bulkhead beneath it.

Sunroof seal had gone leaking water into everywhere, this is a big problem as the rail the sunroof sits in and the screws which hold the glass in are all rotten When I pulled the headlining out a nice shower of rust follwed it.
The other problem due to above is where the water goes afterwards, following gravity as so:





Havn`t a photo yet but there`s a nice big hole in the lower rear wing/sill join, aftermarket drain hole we`ll call it for now.

 

Man, thats bad!

I have only ever seen rust like that in one other S2 that was a D plate we bought to break and had had a quarter panel very badly fitted at some point.

The other quarter was mint.

It looked like yours from the outside but was rotten all over to the point you could push on the panel and hear the rust falling off and into the sill cavity!

 

its not only mine that does that then

Am looking at reshelling at the mo. Although possible to change roof skin, rear wing etc, Be nice to have it back for summer.

 

think your better off reshelling it mate, have you had the sunroof out to see how bad the corrosion is back there?

No, sunroofs still in. Going to have to drill the screws out soon.

Prob will reshell but if I can save it? Is it worth it?
If I was a little more confident with the mig and able to paint, it would be done by now.

Cut front wing off anyway and inner is fine, parts of the car are mint, others past it, weird.

 

Also started to try and sort out loom, removed three lots of old alarm/immob. Cables and plugs every where at the mo. Managed to get the fusebox out but still struggling to get the loom out completely.

 

reshell it mate.youll get another turbo shell & less the work mean back on the road faster

 

id say it really isnt worth it, (even though i hate the thought of scrapping a s2) but the roof has gone which means new roof, drivers side rear quarter (if you can find one) then sills wings , front panel, much easier to find a nice shell, could pick one up for a couple of hundred quid. contact one of the breakers mate. let us all know what you decide.

Bearing in mind if you do shell it, you use the id and plate off the other shell you use .if you dont want to reshell,stuff like quarter panels etc find a minter in the scrappy and cut them off and re use them and the roof ,its not that hard to do ,that way you keep your original shell

 

I would love to replace all the panels myself, bought a front wing and battery tray already. Realisticly I don`t have the skill or time to do the roof and I`m betting a rear quarter isn`t easy.
As said a new shell means new vin but could I transfer the Reg to the new shell??
Anyone hears of a nice shell, finders fee offered!

 

dont think you can transfer the reg mate , because your old reg will go with the scrap shell you will have to use the one the new shell comes with.

 

One of my old S2's rotted in exactly the same places mate

Roof was every bit as bad as yours and drivers side rear wing just below the window edge was prob worse than yours !!!! Ended up just filling the roofskin and managed to cut out and replace the top section of the rear wing, used plenty of rust treatment and the roof repair lasted for a good few years before the car was eventually scrapped

Shell is def worth saving yet mate if you are keen enough and patient enough to repair it
