they do about 120,000 rpm...

Do you think it wobbling a bit and then shatting the compressor wheel, which would send metal lumps into your engine is a good idea?

But then you must ask yourself:
"If i replaced all parts of the rotating assembly exactly back as it was when i started, will the balance have changed at all anyway?"
Interesting question....

exactly stu. as i understand it, you just remove the compressor wheel from the shaft to change the seals and then put it back on at the same angle and nothing should go out of balance.

i read an article on the net somewhere that explained how to do all this. do a google search mate.

I read some where that most turbos do require a balance after a rebuild however with Garratt turbos you can get away with out balancing as they as Garrett balance each component of the shaft assembly independently so no matter how you put it back together it should still be in balance.

I'm not saying its gospal but worth looking into?

Listen to stu...

What get balanced is the shaft n wheels, so how in fuck can changing the seals make it need re-balancing?

It neededing to be rebalanced is just more bullshit companys tell you to justify the prices they charge...

i rebuild my turbos myself , have done for a while , all the parts that come for my garret turbos are individually balanced anyway , its a bit like , taking a tyre off the rim , as long as it goes back in the same place nothing will change !!

out of curioscity, how accurate do you have to be on re-assemble?

if the thing was say 1mm out would it feck stuff? or have you got a bit to play with?

ive never dismantled a turbo or anytihng, just always wondered....

or can they only go back together one way, so you cant get it sightly off?

the hardest bit is actually splitting the housings , after 80,000 miles of the warm up , cool down cycle things tend to become a little tight !!
