hi all

thinking of buying a sapphire cos 4x4..unfortunaltly i would need to tow a caravan occasionally with it ..i know its sacriledge..but needs must)...i currently drive a 24v probe and this turned out to be a good towing car for the rare occasions i tow the van..

anyone got any experience of towing with these?

Errr.....NO. But i used to have an XR 2.9 4x4 which was ideal for towing, plenty of grunt, you know But I guess the Cossie would do the job ok tho, and yes it would be sacrilage LOL

 

i have a 2.9 4x4 and a cossie and the v6 is by far the best for towing. you've got the torque from 500 - 3000 rpm from the v6 (as you probably know from your v6 although your 24v probably is a bit more powerful at top end), whereas with a cossie you've got nothing below 3000 when the turbo comes in cos it's low compression.

if your caravan (and you really should be shot for even contemplating this) is particularly heavy, you might have to really slip the clutch to pull away up hill or something.

i have no experience of towing with a cossie, but if you were to do it, maybe go for a T25 or something where you'll get some boost lower down.

thx for the replies..i figured it would prob be impractical towing...and from memory my old stage 1 2wd was pretty bad at low revs so good point on the torque thing....

can anyone expain best way to get power at lower revs? or is best if i dismiss the idea completely?

best way to get power at low revs is through engine capacity - bigger really is better. this is not cost effective on a cossie, better to go for a 24v v6.

on a yb, you can raise the compression ratio or go for a supercharger or maybe a twin turbo setup.

unless you really want to splash out on it, i would'nt recommend any of these ideas. best bet would be to buy 2 cossie's, 1 mint one for everyday, and one with a knackered engine that you could swap for a 24v v6 from a scorpio for the rare occasions when you tow.

i will keep my v6 probe for towing and get a cossie for a rainy day so to speak
