Default Whats the crack with the GTi ???

And before you all go screaming into the hills i mean the Escort GTi

I think there a reasonable good looking motor and they have all the mod cons my beloved Mk4 XR3i dosnt , namely air con and the air bags etc. Im thinking of treating the missis to one possibley. Just like to get the low down on the engine reliability and any other issues folks have had or know of with them.

Cheers !

there good cars mate but the 1800 115ps engine is a bit lacking in the power department.
good economy and the engine will go on forever if looked after
mk6 shells are quite good with rust, mainly rear arches and rear spoiler mounts are the places that go- should be minimal on a looked after model though!
first thing to change is the brakes as there crap on the gti along with a strut brace to stop the wallowing- i've a had a couple of mk6 si's which is essentially the same car so also look at them aswell but stick to the 1.8s- just no half leather or spats/sideskirts

Hi ive just sold my Gti, theyre spot on engine wise, realiable as the hills id say, ive never had a single problem with mine,

the only thing id say is the track rod ends seem a common problem ive just replaced mine,

oh and if it starts getting really sluggish and bad on petrol it can be resolved by changing the AFM iirc which will improve fuel economy

nice car though if not too concerned about power

wishbones prone to go every few years, chassis legs, tailgate rot, arches tend to deteriate too.

As said good cars, had mine just over 2 years, only problem ive had was the idle speed(too high etc) sorted that 2 years and its been fine ever since.

All i ever do is lift the bonnet and check the levels and it never needs anything, infact personally ive not put anything in myself in 2 years apart from water in the washer bottle

I've just sold an Si that I had for the last two years and 20K miles. Was very reliable and only needed an AFM other than regular service bits. Only depreciated by 60 quid during that time which was good!

Not sure about the good on fuel comments, I never got over 30mpg which is a bit poor for a low powered 1.8 IMO.

Parkers lists the top speed as 122mph and the 0-60 as 9.2secs. It goes ok, but is not exactly what you'd call fast though.

Having said that a looked after low mileage GTi would make a good buy for a cheap and cheerful car.

Awesome cars i was gutted to get rid of mine but it stood me at fook all so i swapped it for my s2 it had to be done cos now ive got fook all in me s2 aswell,

That said i do miss the gti and it does so many things better than the s2 drivability wise,

I lowered my gti on a 60mm gmax kit and the ride was 400 times better than my s2 thats lowered 40mm,

As said it just depends what you want from the car???
