what would you do..?
Clicked buy it now on a car on ebay,
called the man and he seemed ok,
did a HPI check before buying my train ticket to go collect it,
came up on the hpi report "recorded as an insurance write off, recorded as a total loss claim due to damage."
the man said, oh someone drove into it in a carpark a feww months ago and did the rear quarter and the doors, had it fixed on the insurance and they wrote it off. and some shit about him buying it back off them,
he said the paint shop did quate a good job, you will see it when you come up. wtf?
really like the car, but makes me think if he never mentioned that the car was on the hpi, could be a shed load more problems with it too.
really like the car, but as its slightly high milage too, i dont really trust the man now. really stuck on what to do.
whats really f***ed me of is he never mentioned it was on the hpi list or anything when selling in the auction...

Would depend on what I wanted the car for and the price?
If it was just a run a round or something I wouldn't be too bothered but if its after a car you've been after for a while I'd probably steer clear.

Mate, it is an Insurance write off?
Surely you cant use it even if you wanted to. I am not sure, but if this guy did not describe the car properly in the description surely you can remove your intention to buy? I know I would...
Good luck.

Lesson number 1 : Don't buy a car you really want off e-bay
Lesson number 2 : Don't commit to buying a car without seeing it or doing a hpi check
So, steer clear and argue the toss over the negative feedback on e-bay.

If you still want the car go look at it then bid him on it as he should of stated it was recorded it dont make it a bad car but it does make a diffrence on value
either steer clear and find a straight one for the same money or
expect a fair bit off the price you bidded on ebay if you like it
but get it checked over to see if there is anything else wrong or how good the repair really is
judging by the trader ad i would say about £1000 max
oh and if he knows and has admitted to knowing it has been written off he is by law supposed to inform you

Seems as though he didnt even mention it was a write off, id offer him way less than the buy it now price, or tell him to shove it. if he didnt know it was a write off then fair enough but he did and it sounds like he was trying to pull a fast one.

by law he has to state it has been damaged and repaired!
dont buy it and put in a dispute saying item not as described, you do not have to buy something that has not been described correctly

a private seller by law is NOT required to disclose it's on the hpi list, so the bloke hasnt actually lied has he by not saying anything, he's NOT implied to tell you unless you ask him, whereas a trader has to tell you in the description.
You should have HPI'd it before clicking Buy It Now or seriously bidding on it.

So many people misunderstand what write off means!!
A "write off" is because the car is beyond economical repair, as far as THE INSURANCE COMPANY ARE CONCERNED.
For a car to be so, the owner must have already accepted the insurance money for it, as it CANNOT BE WRITTEN OFF WITHOUT THE OWNERS PERMISSION AS HE OWNS IT AND NOT THE INSURANCE COMPANY, if he declines to accept thier offer it is NOT and CANNOT be written off.
Everyone DOES HAVE THE RIGHT to buy back the "salvage" if he/she accepts the offer made in respect of the claim as a TOTAL LOSS, or "WRITE OFF", this is normally around 10% of the pre accident market value.
IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO DRIVE A WRITE OFF, some cars, including my other halfs are written off for scratches, or a few dents, in my case the damage came out at £365.41p, so we accepted thier settlement figure for the damage, after we got assurance "they had no further interest", this means that it remains our property to do with as we like, we still drive it mot it insure it etc, it has dent around 1/4" deep and 3 inches long with some other colour paint now "T" cut out!!
I always buy cat d "write offs", the one before this was a 5 year old astra with 11,000 miles for £600, spent 3 day replacing a few bent suspension parts, other parts, total of £280-£300, car had all the toys full service history, sold it for a lot more!!
The man on ebay is telling porkies though, insurers do not pay for repairs, then write off a car, they do one or the other.
If the car has MOT you can still use it as well.
