Default Bloody Pop Up's are doing my head in!! HELP!!!!!!

OK Guys, I am reaching the end of my teather. I am getting loads of pop ups and infuriating shit on my laptop. I have tried to uninstall that "internet optimiser" thing and a few other dodgy programs that I think has something to do with it. I do use Norton Anti Virus and Zone Alarm. Can anyone help me out with this. I am running XP pro with service pack 2 installed.

Warren please do not reply as I am yet to find anyone that is happy with there PC after you have even so much as looked at it.

Thanx

Sean..

Sean, answered above

You shouldn't get pop ups unles you have a web page open, if you are and your not on any web page then the PC is infected and will need cleaning with something free and useful like spybot search and destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Sean you must have got some of the crap-ware installed, definitely 100% recommend the link by Smit to Ad-aware, will clear the lot out! Keep running it until it doesn't find anything - works a treat!

OK Guys cheers for all of your help here.

I have found the IE pop up blocker and have adjusted the settings to maximum (they were set to medium) is that the right thing to do?

Do I still need to install http://toolbar.google.com/ as Smit sugested or will the IE pop up blocker be suficient

I installed the Ad-Aware software and ran it and it found 670 bad things (is that a lot or a typical amount??), which it deleted all but two of. I am currently re-booting my laptop as it reckons it can get rid of the other two after that.

Sean..

The toolbar(s) stop any pop ups as they happen, add aware and the like delete them after you have been given them, or programs to run them

Use both for a healthy system

Sean...

Dont run a pop-up blocker as all they do is mask your problem.

As you have found by running Adaware your machine is INFESTED with Spyware.. all of which is raping you of information and lets face it... you dont get spyware from the BBC...

I suggest you spend more time in the workshop and re-discover your wife.... this will prevent you from wandering onto the type of sites you've been going to to pick up 670 items of Spyware.

Trust me... I'm an IT professional ! not a wannado-wanna-be

adaware is great i run it every now and again and never see ANY pop up's

make sure you keep updating it Sean which is simple to do when you launch the program there should be a link saying "check for updates now" click that and it will load new info on pops to look for on your pc when you run it again.
