Default lcd tv advice(updated)

I'm after a tv but not sure on all the differnt type's and numbers and what they mean.

The one i was looking at was the samsung le40m87 which is 1080 and full hd. Now my understanding is that full hd is the way forward as you dont need a hd input and its the tv that gives you the hd quality. Am i right or am i talking bollox

Please help before i waste 1k

no you will need an HD source for full HD still

Full HD (as they are spouting in marketing) is 1080p. so any source that gives this HD DVD blue ray ps3 etc

the TV you mention is the one my brother bought a few months back....its awesome, far superior to my LG, but it did cost twice as much

get yourself on avforums mate....i know when i was looking there was loads of unhappy people.....havent been on for a while so maybe all sorted now....dont cost nothing to read a few posts.

hd ready will run at least on 720p
full hd...both 720p and 1080p are both known as full hd but 1080p being the better out the two.

The extended warranty is a must, panel failure is still quite common and its the most expensive part of the tv to replace obviously.

A mate of mine is on his 3rd 42" Bravia from Currys, one with sys board failure, other with knackered panel. He's glad he got the extended warranty

Though the engineer from Currys (is it still called mastercare?) tried to swizz him. Brought a system board out to fit into existing tv at my mates house, he takes it out of the box and proceeds in swapping the boards over. My eagle eyed mate then notices the replacement board hasnt got as many HDMI sockets on it - engineer plays dumb and reckons he never noticed Managed to get another engineer out the next day with the "proper" board

try www.empiredirect.com for good deals.....if you want it on interest free credit (10 months) print the empire direct page out with your chosen telly on (assuming its an identical model that currys stock), take it down to your local currys and they will price match it on the spot no questions asked, even if you take in on interest free

I've had a few bad dealings from currys so wont be going anywhere near the place tbh. Our local house of fraser has a electrical department and tbh the price seems to be cheaper than on the net with the 5 year warrenty and i once bought a stereo off them which kinked after 5 months and i got a full refund no questions or hassle so i'll probably got there tbh

I've got the R87 Samung LCD, brother has the R74 Samung LCD and a friend has the Samsung Q97 plasma, the plasma is so much better in terms of quality, contrast ratio and colour depths its funny.

He bought it for Ł700 inc vat and I've seen it in costco for Ł730inc vat with a 3 year warranty. If I was to buy again I'd have that plasma or one of the new pioneer KURO plasmas.

What HiFi has some good reviews if your stuck

So do you think the q97 is far better than the lcd versions?, i was always under the impression lcd's were better and more reliable than the plasmas

Lots of magazine and internet reviews seem to think plasma's are much better and from the ones I've actually seen I'd have to agree. It seems a lot of peeps have a plasma phobia because a friends 3K Hitachi plasma from 5 years ago was wank... all the best TV's you can buy at the moment are Plasma's. I recommended that Q97 Plasma to another friend a few months ago and he's super chuffed with it, cant really complain for Ł660.00 either.

Best advice would be to go to a few shops and actually look at the quality for yourself, bearing in mind what input they are using (RF, DVD, SKY, HD etc )

If you do want a samsung LCD it seems the M series is being phased out.

Ye i see what your saying i was over comet today and tbh there didnt seem to be much difference between them really. Plus aint some better at 1 thing than other and vice versa. The problem is nowhere seems to give model no's on the tv's in the shops just 42" lcd then a spec, but there all the same but with different prices

Proper confusing why cant they just say this is the bollox this is the 1 for you lol

Why though i read somewhere that at 1080 you have to be less than 3 times the height of the tv away for the human eye to see the details lol

allways the way tho, aint it, once everyone outs their crappy 1080i sets for 1080p, they then need to sell them something better and better

As TV sizes get bigger the resolution has to go up to cater for it.

Turning the sharpness setting down to about 20/25 should help, the problem your getting is your TV is really sharp and high res but the content going into it is pants.

Well done.....so many people get so phased with user reviews and forums they end up never buying what they want

you got your money went to the shop and bought a TV and now you can enjoy it...rather than spending the next 6 weeks wondering which one to buy

Tbh putting this post up and reading avforums made me realise that most of the stuff people goon about is bollox unless you are a home cinema boffin who rubs 1 out over special hd leads and hdmi ports and the such. Me i just want to watch porn on it and play my 360 online on it and feel like i'm really there in both situations
