on the escorts they are 5.5mm nuts. (assuming you speaking about the nuts behind the wheel. but you can hit sockets on.
or get away with imperial ones.

undo them then pull them out with pliers and then pull the airbag off.

just remember when the airbag is off and your removing the steering wheel undo the 2 screws on the inside (behing where the air bag is when on wheel) before you pull it off. i made this mistake and pulled the little disk behind it apart and exposed the coil of wiring. pissed me off! so fiddly.

why you taking clocks off?

is it digital dials or not? cause if its manual (where numbers rotate) like a fruit machine its easy to take the cable off. just loosen the clocks off, push the cable through from the other side a bit so you can get your hands in there and see.

then you will see at the end of the cable attatched is a plastic housing. and all you do is squeese the 2 bits of it that stick out slightly and pull it out. simple.

nothing to worry about.

I've taken the clock out of my old mk4 before without taking the wheel out.

Disconnect the wires by reaching round behind, the cable came off by pushing the collar where it meets the clocks to one side. When you've done that just take the two bulbs off the top and take the front facia off the clocks by pushing the tabs in, then you can take the parts out seperately.

but its so much easier to take clocks out by removing steering wheel first.
taking the wheel off aint too much of a problem anyway, so may aswell do that.
