Has anybody used a turbo jacket before?

Ive only seen the ones on e bay, a bit pricey but are they worth it? Does anybody know of anywhere that sells them?

IIRC Rod Tarry uses one.

 

www.demon-tweeks.co.uk sells them for about £100. dont know of how effective they are but if used with exhaust wrap it should make a big difference to under bonnet temps. which is good .

Used one and would never use one again, They are fine if you are not running the turbo hard but if you do it cooks its.

Used for one Topspeed test run & it fried the Turbo, locked it solid so it was not used again. Neil (Carwise) had the same problem , probably OK for street use but not if you get your Turbo red hot on a Topspeed run.

I wonder how long is too long in regarding to giving it full beans with it all wrapped.

 

i had one on mine but it fell to bits when i removed the turbo and never bought a new 1.

cant say i noticed alot of differance

 

just wrap a carrier bag around it

 

Im sure Rod said it lowered the boost threshold on his a little, increased reposnce, whatever.

What sort of cost difference is there between a jacket and getting the exhaust housing ceramic coated? Would ceramic coating work more effectively and reliably?

If the turbo is getting so hot that it seizes, it would imply that you are relying on radiation to keep the turbo cool, which would imply you need a better cooling system for the turbo - perhaps a post-turbo rad to keep temps down and/or a dedicated electric pump circuit for the turbo?

In 24 other Topspeed runs my Turbo has been fine its the jacket thats at fault not my Turbo. The solution was simple take it off & throw in bin.

 

Not saying it's something wrong with the turbo - just that it's only stopping radiation of heat that was already generated.....what if something else got in the way?

I guess another way of looking at it is that the passing of air and the principal of radiation can be relied on more heavily than any additional cooling equipment could be!

Any idea what your EGTs were at the point things went pear shaped?

The jacket will keep heat in the housing and the core, preventing it getting into the engine bay, but it'll cook the core. Ceramic coating the exhaust housing will help keep the core cooler (it won't help the exhaust turbine though) and the engine bay as well.

 

Well i dont think i will be getting one!

My main consern was with my new manifold, it brings the turbo over the gearbox and the turbo sits very close to the brake servo.

I did'nt want the turbo heating up the brake fluid, possibly giving me very bad brake fade!

 

heat wrap the brake pipes and servo then, i think alot of people do that
