Default Some indicators not flashing + relay question. FIXED!

.

I suck at electrics, but presumed a bulb is a bulb, and if a light was daisy chained in to other indicator wires, it will work regardless?

Im just trying to sort the Chasers fast flashing issue and if I daisy chain a VW polo front indicator, or BMW side indicator in, they dont light up (but the others its daisy chained in with still do, so the circuits there still), but if i plug others in, they do?

Annoying and confusing, as the Polo ones are the only ones the right size I can find.

steve dont knowif this is any help but some ofthe newer cars have switches that are not switches but modules wherethe cables are signal wires rather than voltage if that makes sence

dont know about the bmw ones though, i know volvo do though and so when fitting a window switch you need to program the ecu to accept it

What exactly are u trying to replace? Ie what is it off a polo that fits the chaser?

Ginge is right about the signal wire thing, but if you are working at the bulb wiring end, it won't make a difference.

They are "just" bulbs aint they steve, not some sort of LED's ?

Just incase they are LED's maybe try connecting the wires to them the other way round as LED's will only work connected one way, where as bulbs work whatever way round.

Just the only thing I can think of why a bulb wont work like a bulb

Oh and didnt read it 100%, what WOULD the wattage of the original bulbs add up to on one side, like say 5w in back 5w in front and any side repeaters.

Having the wrong wattage total can affect flash rates

Basically when i got the car the front indicators were missing, and at some point in its life the side repeaters were daisy chained in to them too.

I fitted some side repeaters and different side repeaters as front ones, they all flash but still too fast, and just failed the MOT because of it.

So thinking its prob flashing too fast because the bulbs not drawing enough current, I tried to replace the current front with some fronts from a 1986 VW polo, which should fit.

But the VW ones dont light up? So tried some E30 BMW side repeaters and they dont either.

And as no way 4 bulbs are gone, so dont get it.

Nobody know why they dont flash?

Also, if an indicator flasher relay fails, does it flash FAST, or does it just NOT FLASH AT ALL?????

Trying to work out the prob here. If I could easily pull the relay to check I would, but I dunno where it is

if the flasher unit fails, then it will not flash at all. The reason they are flashing too fast is because the bulbs are not drawing enough current, you will notice that if you see a car with a fast flashing indicator then one of the bulbs will have blown, so it isnt drawing as much current, hence the fast flashing.

What should the chaser have as standard? Does it have side repeaters? If not, remove them and take them out of the equation for now. The front and rear indicators should have 21 watt bulbs as standard, so they pull enough current to make the relay flash at the correct speed. Make sure that they both have these bulbs.

When thats done let us know what happens and we can go from there

When they dont flash have you checked you've actually got 12v / earth at the cables - just use a multimeter to test. You may have an intermittent wiring fault somewhere & its just coincedence that the new flashers dont work.

Also test the different flashers straight off the battery to ensure they do work!

Chop- It totally pissed it barring no rear fog and flashing at more than 120 times a min, so free retest on them bits and its away.

Jungle- Good info Not a relay issue then, phew.
I think the issue then is DEFFO that the current front indicators are actually side ones.
It hasnt got side repeaters as standard, but mines had them fitted as a mod wierdly enough.
Its got loads of fucking indicators, rear ones, side ones, front side ones, and the front ones in the bumper, which is what im trying to use the Polo ones for, as at mo they little ones that obv arnt drawing enough current.

Lee- Good point about testing em straight off the battery, its deffo not a wiring fault as the current little front indicators work, they just dont when i try replacing them with the Polo ones.
Seems a strange co-incidence if both the polo and E30 ones are broke, but ill check off the battery.

If they do work off the battery though, im stumped, as they just 2 wires, so direct swap for the current indicators

Well thats the point, thats what the Polo ones are, proper front ones, but for some reason they wont light up

Ill go outside in a min and test em direct to battery, been putting it off as it wet n cold n i only got in from last night at about 11am this morning

SOLVED IT

Dont really get it, but dont care

Checked VW indicators direct to battery, they work

When daisy chaining a new bulb in it seemed like it didnt work as there wasnt enough power to light em up.

This confused me as i didnt expect this as it was still flashing way too fast.

By removing the aftermarket side repeaters some Japanese clown had fitted and JUST running the VW polo fronts, it flashes at normal speed and is bright as hell.

Now ive got 2 big fucking holes where my side repeaters were, cunt

BUT i should have an MOT by the end of the day!
