Cracked piston is fairly serious. Replacement engine or proper rebuild really.

Depends on how you want it to turn out. Best bet to fix it cheaply is a second-hand engine, but its a gamble.

If the piston really is cracked, it's likely to have scored the bore and potentially ruined the block.

How does he know the piston is cracked?

chris has told you what to do mate...and given you most scenarios mate.

how much is it and depends how much you want from the engine will determine how much it will cost to put right etc...need a bit more info to be honest mate

had a cat engine do this had a hole in piston was in the middle though didnt hurt the bore. if its cheap enough then worth the gamble id say. may only be one piston, hone and re ring and new bearings and headgasket and away.

i dont know much though dave just at what he has told me and what isee ie smoke comeing from rocker cap and dipstick and loads of oil in intercooler pipes just want a rough idea on how much to rebuild it myself or with a little help ie i strip everything down get all the parts then get some one who knows what they are doing to help me rebuild it???

tbh getting another engine could be a big mistake i think as it may only be slightly better than the engine thats in it now barr the smoke???

tell us how much the car is (dont worry no-one will buy it out from under your nose)

what the spec is, bodywork etc, then we can make a decision as to whther its worth it.

an engine rebuild on a CVH can cost anything from £1000 upwards. depending on spec of engine and how much work you wanna do?

car is £500 quid its a 88 xr3i converted to s2 rs turbo spec its white with half leather recaros e reg loads of chrome in engine bay chipped uprated acutator std turbo alloy rad but std intercooler, samcos

mot is til feb and tax til feb also roof is brand new and bodywork is showing very very little signs of rust there is no rust at all in the usual places ie battery tray, sills, inner wings etc

the big downside is this piston!!!! and i am not 100 on buying it if its gonna cost loads to do??? was gonna put engine in my cab (se500) ie rebuild it and transfer all the good bits over or just leave mine std as it is and do up the rst????

500 is good if the rest of the spec is in reasonable condition. You will easily see that if you break it.

I would say buy it (assuming it is otherwise in reasonable condition), if it does turn out to be too expensive, break it and make your money back
