Anyone know about them?
I wanna retrain as i'm getting on now
And need to buckle down now...... I've always wanted to be an electrician and i think i need to do something now before its to late
But, its going to cost a few quid + living on my own + bills etc.... Its going to be a very tight thing and i'm wondering if i can get any government help to see me thru the courses?
Any help advice would be cool

Depends what you want to do.
I started uni last year at 26.
Classed as a mature student as I had been 22+ for over 6 months so I am not means tested for the following:
I got £3000 fees loan
I got £3400 ish maintenance loan
I got £2700 GRANT that I dont need to pay back
I got £250 bursary from the university that I dont need to pay back.
Then I got a job after my first full time year and have 3 years part time of my degree left plus 2 years to do my chartership as I am doing a degree in Quantity Surveying.
The job I got is a good salary for a trainee but expect somewhere around the 14-16k mark depending on what you're training in.
If you choose correctly you can choose something at Uni which will allow you to do this- for example choosing an English degree will be POINTLESS.
Other options are teaching options as the gov't is screaming for them.
Hope this helps.
Jake
PS- Popeye sucks ass!!!

(unlike Popeye's reply

Any chance you could maybe point me in the direction of where to get further info on the grants stuff via PM?

i went and seen someone at connexxtions (think thats how they spell it) and found a course at uni that was good for me, needed to do a foundation year first though as i had no a levels, am now in my second year of a mechanical engineering degree and get pretty much the same as what shings above gets and will be doing a placement year next year.
i work part time aswell though so that helps alot, but i manage with my own house and car etc so it is do-able it can be difficult at times trying to fit everything in though.
student finance direct deal with the loans and grants so their website is a good place to look.
les.

I know if you are looking at electrical training the 'young apprentaship scheme' will only fund people 23 & under.
I am sure if you was serious about getting trained if you approached some company's for a job they may find a way for you to get trained even if its college night classes, they may help with costs?

Personally, I'd never thought I'd be able to get into uni, missed my chance etc, and if I could, then funding myself would be impossible. Just had a look at that site and I reckon I could do it now, got to be worth a try.
I fancied a career change and looked everywhere to get funding for my HGV training - i even got my local councillor involved who couldn't get me a penny so i funded it myself - and i'm in an area which has got Billions of European funding allocated for social regeneration etc...some fuckers are pocketing backhanders somewhere.
