Default smoky cossie.....advice please

Right, mate has just got a cossie but its smoking quite badly when you come off the throttle. There is no smoke at all on start up or normal driving ......when youve been on boost and lift off only then does it start to smoke a lot then when you go back on the throttle you get a puff too.
I think i can eliminate rings coz it would smoke all the time but not sure if its turbo or valve guides.

Any advice welcome before he spends money on the wrong bits

Turbo would be my guess, but hard to tell without looking.

Especially when backing off, do you get smoke on idle at all after a good run

I would go with turbo, possible rebuild time i am affraid, Blue points to oil related, take of the filter pipe and see how much play there is in the shaft if there is definate up and down movement (you will prob feel a little click), thiswould point out itsworn, it also could be rear oil seals in the turbo

Sorry

ive already checked for play in shaft and theres pretty much none at all.

I thought worn valve guides had the same effect but i dont think this would cause the excessive amount of smoke which is being produced

you need to do a bit more investigation maybe, before sending your turbo off etc,

If its happening under vacuum conditions only, it sounds like it could well be stem seals IMHO
