Are thay better than ally ones?

Got speaking to a rep that came in to our yard and he says he can make me up a rad for the cossie with a big copper core and solid brass/copper end tanks' and he got back to me with a price of £170 + the dreaded

Would it be any better than ally?

 

I belive so ,my track car will be getting one ,the copper should have better cooling qualities,or so i have been told by a guy who makes them .
May not look bling but will work better.

Not to bothered about the looks and its not a bad price IMHO a bit different to.

The only real advantage with a Good Alloy item, is they can haddle more pressure, the looks, and usually larger core than std.


But Copper is better at cooling, if the same size.

yes, better. It's just copper is so fragile.

 

ALLOY is stronger ?, NO it's not copper is nearly twice as strong as alloy for the same size when it is annealed copper, it also conducts nearly twice as much heat as aluminum.
There are very few better conductors of heat but one is PURE SILVER but very weak.
The main reason why copper is not NOW so popular is to do with soldering the tubes together, but all the rads used to be made of copper years ago, a lot still are but mainly on big commecrcial stuff.
Please can you tell me who will do these rads out of copper for this price please, as I want one for and and intercooler.

I know AARON radiator co; do them out of copper if you want.
They can also do the intercoolers out of copper as well.

copper is a better heat conductor but most of the alloy rads are bar and plate design which is more efficient, surely this should be considered


a bar and plate copper rad would be the one to have but would be very heavy

You don't want to over engineer it though, as you also want max airflow.
Bar and Plate can be copper too.

i was gonna ask nisans to make me a copper rad or see if they do the cores atleast but keep forgetting

for a rad,,,,, nope as they presure aint as high as boost somehow

intercooler,,,, dont go there, stick with the rad for now mate

the r5 turbos theres copper core rads for them for years,,,, they seem to have cooling issues

oh and btw,, if you rad bannanas then change the head gasket as thats what ive noticed happens to alot of cossies

 

Bar and plate is not about pressure, its about surface area
more surface area being cooled at any given time hence more effecient

 

So ???

 

Got a spare rad picked up today so will see how it turns out.

 

We do all our uprated rads for the Anglia boys, aswell as other Old School Ford, in Copper and brass and they work fine.

The beauty of them is they are around 2.5 times cheaper than the equivalent ally rad and they can be repaired if they get holed, whereas an ally rad is basically scrap.

The downside is they weigh a tonne.

However, in saying that, my 2.0 Zetec Anglia runs a 1.0 Polo rad, in ally and its mega efficient and I dont get any overheating problems at all.


What some people are doing now is buying a modern rad with the plastic tanks and then having ally tanks welded on the ends to give them more strength and to suit different applications and that seems to be a nice cheap way of getting an ally rad.

Copper rads are very good. Had one in my old XR3i, Dartford Radiators made it for me. 3-row cooling and I asked for an extra 2 vertical braces as the original ones used to bow (something to do with not liking the crap cheap rads). Never had a problem with it. Got it in 1999 and sold it on the 2nd XR3i I had which I sold beginning of this year. Still like when it came out the box.

Let me know how much one would cost for a normal Sierra and I'd be VERY interested.
