As i live practicalliy in manchester city centre ive been looking at track cars as the speed traps and police are rife around here can.t do 30 nevermind speed anyhow??

What sort of money does it actually cost as i was thinking of a pug 205 gti with m16 conversion and throttle bodies plenty for sale all ready to go with spares most of them?

I know i will love it and 205 's handled ok when they was in fashion!!(lol)

Anyway could anyone who does it give a breakdown of a trackday costs ?

What do you think of the choice of car ?

Any views welcome but im on a budget of the price of a car within £3000 tops as it might only come out 10-12 times a year?

You get a lot of a car for around 2-3k all ready to race just need to know what it costs roughly?

Been thinking of it for a while now and decided its what i really want to do in life who knows i might be pretty good as im extremly competative

Think turbo cars will cost too much although i could be wrong ??

 

my eldest lad gets his licence soon so we guna try and get him through his a test ,were going to build a corsa with a 2.0 xe lump for track hopefully to keep him from acting the goat on the road . there might cheap toy to build and repair

 

Trackdays generally cast between anywhere £69 (half day) upto £400 full day premium dates

Expect the average cost to be £150 for a full day.

Fuel can be 1 full tank per day (not including getting there and back) so budget £55 for that, then your normal travelling costs.

Tyres - spend what you like really £250 should see you in the cheap get you going part of the market.

Brake pads £80 - £150 (should last 1 year)

Brake Fluid £40 (change TWICE a year)

Safety items like helmet, harnesses, etc spend what you can afford to get decent stuff.

Actually go out and DO a trackday before you buy a dedicated car!

I'd also budget more like £250 inc total fuel and consumables per event. Full summer days at decent circuits are rarely less than £150 these days. It can be an expensive hobby!

 

205 is a perfect choice, although I would steer clear of Mi16 ones for track days, you can still get major oil problems cornering and it will cost a lot if you are rebuilding the bottom end frequently.

I have a standard 1.9 engine in my 205 track car and it is fine for the job so far I spent the money on a cage, slicks, bilstein coilovers, big brakes and a limited slip diff instead! It will get a power upgrade at some point but that is last on the list

i built this up for around 1200/1300 quid and it goes well




was a 1.8 16v xr2i now has,

2.0 zetec
de-cat
rs1800 ecu
exhaust and filter
gmax shocks and spring
4x4 cossie front brakes and braided lines
every bush and gasket changed for new
stripped out with corburu seats and harness
yoko parada 195/50/15 £150 quid a set off ebay and do around 2/3 days


to sum it up it does the job and has plenty more potential to go quicker its 100bhp at the wheels but has loads more tourqe then the 1.8,
it can pull past a 306 gti-6 to a ton to give you an idea of performance and was up with plenty of cossies and much more powerfull cars at the rs combe day recently purly on how much speed it carries through the bends,just thought it might be worth you considering something along these lines before you go french because i can 100% say that this car has given me no trouble at all apart from a knackerd clutch in 6 track days this year and gets some real abuse belive me

what about a clio 1.8 16v, ive had loads of 205s including mi16s and turbos and after a recent spell in a clio 16v much prefered it very good chassis can be a pain to work on but the pugs are aswell.

Well guys you give me plenty to think about there i only have a small mortgage so i was budgeting around 3-400gbp for each indivual track day i do

I can.t honestly say without looking more into it on which car yet?

This will defo materialise as i need to see how good my driving skills really are without police and the public in the way as im 28years old and started to develop the brain to think and act a lot more sensible

I don.t have that many outgoings and the going out lark gets a bit long in the tooth when you practically live 10min walk to a large city centre and been goin there since i was 15 wed/fri/sat sunday;s.

Ive always wanted to do this and don.t get me wrong i don.t have bags of dollars but lookin at my cards on the table this i should be able manage comfortably as long as i find the right car not popping engines for fun

The person who mentioned the clio 16valve as a track car?

I use to own a williams clio one of the best cars ive ever owned 8years ago kept it for 3years and in that time of which i can truthfully say it had a C.V joint a clutch and eventually i replaced the gearbox !!!Not bad considering i drove it like i stole for 3 solid years it got death 7000rpm every gear every day most reliable engine ive ever had !!!!!!!!I knew the next 3 people who owned the car and it still going strong on the isle of man in some track series !!!!!

Surly it must of had a new engine by now it never felt like it was going to break and me and my brother went to buy one the other week i test drove it the guy said fookin hell mate you know what your doing with these don.t you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of the box simply 1 of the best handling cars ive ever driven eat up corners for fun!!!

P.S when i changed the gearbox it was no so fun anymore fook me what a job without a ramp!!

 

Thx for that what i was expecting do you know where you can go to rent a car at a track so i can give it a whirl i know i would love it anyhow as cars are my life!!!!

I also set up a massive communication network for a company that mass produces/sells all major car parts to all the garages and market in the north-west and ive known the company for 8years and tyres/brakes/clutches/and lots of similar i get 55% discount on top of there trade price which is cheap anyhow so i may be able to use this for my track cars depending on what im after for the car?

 

Many of the trackday organisers have a car available for hire.

Try getting out to a few beforehand to see how they operate.

If you "drive it like you stole it" on track you will soon get booted off

They will allow you to have some "fun" so are not kill joys but its all done in in a safe and controlled way.

There are track events on almost daily up and down the country now.

I thought track days was all about pushing your limits/having fun i may just go down to one soon and like you said have a butchers!!!!!

You have to remember there will be between 30 and 60 other people around you, both on and off track and if you put them in any sort of danger by your 'drive it like you stole it' antics then you will very soon be on your way home and forfeit all your cash.

Yes you can drive your car at a speed your comfortable with, yes you can drive the hire cars at a speed your both comfortable with, but no you cant treat it as A) a race B) a drift practice session or C) a two fast two furious film shoot

The days are organised for everyone to get the chance to safely drive their car around a race rack. If you want a race go racing with a proper licence

You wont be building a good xe nova for that sort of money

2k minimum and a 1.9gti will still run circles round you through the bends.

Nova needs coilovers and a lsd to even stand a chance of going round a corner, 205 does it straight out of the box.

Nova is harder to get to handle nicely but tuning is far better with a xe IMO.

Swings and roundabouts but for your first track car I'd get a 205 as they are very cheap and great fun.

 

Thx for that its just when i watched several track days on you tube from within drivers cars it does look like racing to me as they seem to get very annoyed if cars don.t let them past!!!

I think i will come down to anglesey and take a peek and have a chat around with the other track day people!

And just to let you know i would follow the rules and regulations as its all about health and safety and that i understand don.t think im a boy racer as them days are long gone and i was just emphasising how strong and reliable the williams clio i owned was!

Depends on who you are, the spec required, and the location its going too so its hard to say

Odd that as most of the ones that have beaten me on track have later retired due to the bottom end knocking itself to bits.

Surely there is a cure for that ?

 

Yep - extend the pick up pipe in the sump.

Thats all I did to my 205 rallycar and I then gave it 3 years of hard abuse with not a single failure.

(Well until I left it over winter with no antifreeze in it and the ice cracked the block )

as tony has just said , i think they do have a slight problem with the oil gallerys in the head ,does take while to get back down to the sump
