any golf gti turbo know it alls out there............
im after getting a golf turbo . got £4k tops to spend . ive been looking for a nice clean 3 dr .
now the bit i dont know about is what should the car have with it and what is fitted extras . i dont want to go and buy the first one i see then realise its a basic one and i could have got more for my money if i had held on .
right , as i understand it they are 1.8 20v turbo engines pushing out 150bhp .
but ......... ive seen some that have 180 in brackets not 150 ?? is this a factory option ??
the rear head rests ? are these factory extras or only on later models ??
ive been told to get one with the bigger recaros in ?? now ive seen some pics of the interior and some seem to have blueish or redishh recaros in witch soom biggish where as others seem to have black and greyish seat that look more basic ?it mite be the pics thouh , so is there decent front seats and back seats fitted ?
traction control , climate control , A/C , anti dazzle rear mirror
are these extras again ?
and when are they due cambelt and tensioner changes ........
i will be looking at S regs to maybe W regs so if some of what ive asked is only on the later ones that explains that .
sorry if these questions seem basic but i just want to get a nice one ............and pics will follow !!!
cheers peeps

the 180 is very rare only the last ones had that ( i think)
for your £4k you'll get an early car, should have recarro seats make sure it has aircon as some dont, also some dont have multi cd either, wont be leather either at that money.
good cars well able to cope with mega miles so dont worry about 100k plus with FSH which will get you a newer example..

I have literally put my Mk4 up for sale last week mate, 3dr dark met.Blue turbo gti on a T plate. Lovely condition etc etc....
Pretty much all of them are 150brake, the 180s are rare as hens teeth, as you said all of what you said above are extras, they basically came with fook all!!!! The earlier ones had recaro interior (embroidered logo) and the later ones had seats made by VW (but look the same). Cambelts at 70k I think as well as tensioners.
if your interested in mine mate let me know and ill take some pics! My friend has just finished cleaning and polishing her so looks spangly! I've also got 18" alloys on there, recently had the cambelt service done, replaced the rear axle bushes as well which are almost guaranteed to fail at some point and are a bitch to do! (I had Powerflex ones fitted to mine!)
Cheers
Chris

Ok here's some info for you...
Earlier 1.8Ts have the larger ported heads so there is scope for more power but that's only really useful when you get to around the 250bhp mark
there's loads of different variants but all they refer to is the type of management used apart from the anniversary models which were 180bhp made by the different type of turbo (K03s as opposed to K03)
They are around 8k now and apart from the higher power they had front and rear bumper extensions, sideskirts, R32 brushed alu interior parts, different interior, smoked headlights, rear spoiler, bigger brakes and the BBS RC 18" wheels that corrode like mad!
Only available in red, silver or black, there were 3000 of them made, 1500 petrol, 1500 diesel
Not worth the extra 4k IMO
Recaro interior is defo the way to go, the only thing I hated with mine was the wood trim but that was easy to change. Air con is a must, climate if you can find it is even better.
Not much goes wrong with them other than what Chris said, plugs, cam belt and tensioners should be done every 60k.
you should be able to find one with at least some history for around the 4k mark. Front ARB bushes can go but they are easy to do yourself and cheap, rear bushes are a nightmare!
If you can make sure its had the original water pump replaced with the newer VW one, the first they made was plastic and had a habit of shattering!!
If you want any more info let me know
Here's some pics of mine to get you thinking anyways

I've had the 4-motion front and rear valances fitted and colour coded, anniversary skirts and headlights fitted also
