Default BMW 328i sport

I have recently been having some coolant issues with my car and have been told need a new water pump, yesterday after topping up mycoolant i think i caused a airlock and my temperature started going into the red for about 15secs twice each time, the car is now in the garage to be fixed but just wondering will this have caused any internal damage and how comon are head gaskets on these cars?

the other day where I work I had a BMW 316ti compact that had a blown head gasket. Oil got into the coolant and I found a shitload of brown gunk everywhere including the bottom end cooling slots, rad, everything. Was totally fucked.

Its really not good if your head gasket goes because of the VANOS. ONLY BMW can put the VANOS back together as it requires special tools to do. Also quite expensive.
