Why aren't I loaded?
Hi all,
I've been thinking about this a lot recently, and watching Big Brother tonight has made me think a lot more about it.
The thing is, I know a few people with huge houses, Some with Ferraris etc, and another of my mates has just landed an £80k a year job with Porsche UK. Basically, without being materialistic, People I know are progressing well and making a lot of money/assets.
So, here's lil ol me, joined the Army from school and as some of you know, I'm now in a job that I adore. The thing is though, I work every day, and a good few nights too. I do 2 days and 2 nights with the Fire Brigade (£20k a year to risk your life!lol
) I have my own Intruder Alarm company which involves me fitting alarms every day I'm not working with the Brigade, but if I can squeeze an evening installation in I will. I also sub contract to Chubb doing "On Call" at weekends, and I have my own Motorsport Safety company, another job I love doing, I try and fit in atleast one day a week doing this too but when I can't get other qualified guys to cover events for me, and I get my cut on top.
Basically, I work on average 100+ hours a week easily. So why am I always skint? We shop as ASDA to get everything as cheap as we can, I don't spend loads on clothes etc and nor does my wife. I only go out once a month and I drive a 55mpg 10 year old Audi an an everyday motor. I have to my name about £80 at the moment, no savings, a small pension and no real big assets.
Yes, my wife doesn't work as she looks after our nipper, and I have a nice home and a Skyline ,which hasn't left the garage for 8 months because I can't afford to run it. But how come some people work 9-5 , 5 days a week and have the lovely £500k house and a few Cayennes outside? Is it because they get an awesome wage, or have rich parents?
So, Where am I going with these ramblings? I can't work any harder, I have ulcers inside my mouth from hard work and I feel totally knackered all the time. I'm starting to get really cross at things a lot now, even little things which if you know me and my personlity, you'd probably not believe as I'm always smiling. My limbs ache and I'm basically just not feeling well.
With all this in mind it's got me thinking, shall I just give it all up and try to get a job in the city, use my hard working background to try and get "The Apprentice" style job? Take some risks, add a bit of bullshit to my CV and go for the £80k jobs you see in the paper?
I spose just through hard work the most you can make is £250 a day, which doesn't go far, but if you take the risks, wear a suit, talk all the jargon and "take lunch" can you do it?
What do you all recon? Failing that there's always the Dole and go on Jeremy Kyle?

2 words mate, Blue collar, theres no fucking money in grafting anymore.
you need to be a desk jockey to earn decent coin these days, Britain as evolved from the "working class hero" and all the industries have gone to countries that are in a similar state to the UK all those years ago, we've moved on, unfortunately this means theres less money for folks like you and me.

Without wanting to look like it's showing off, I made a lot of money last year, a hell of a lot, mainly because I worked me bollocks off for it. When my mum did my Tax Returns for me she couldn't believe how much I'd made. So why isn't there a Land Rover Sport outside? My mortgage is £1k a month, which is a lot, but I just want the hours I work and the effort I put in to reflect my families lifestyle.

Id love to earn money like that, but to be honest,
I have a nice flat, a lovely girlfriend, i love my car, have good friends & have my local. My job isnt great or not great wages, but it pays the bills & im all in all happy with my life. Its not a case of the more your earn, the more you get use to it is it??

when i left school they was encouraging people to go to office jobs, but the fact is most crappy office jobs pay 15k and have next to NO chance of progression.
thats one good thing in my job at least, the higher jobs are almost solely from promotion, you literally work to the top, you dont appear there like most jobs, and you dont stay where you are for ever like most jobs.

One of my mates has a v simple life, he once bought a copy of Autotrader into work and we all realised it was the first time we'd ever seen him buy something! ever! I'm trying to live the simple life at the mo, try and adopt a "whatever" attitude to things outside of work.
thing is - as i do payroll i see what thee high earners in our company get. i wouldnt turn down 50+k per year but you'd shocked how much tax and NI you pay!!
sometimes wonder is it worth all the struggle? wayne rooney for eg - after £33 300 he is paying 40% on everything! nightmare! no wonder becks took it all abroad!!

People like to keep up with the jones and over stretch themselves.
Its very simple - you live to your means or better still live under your means.
If I was you I would stick to one job only, downside your house, sell all the cars you own and buy a shed. I bet your be happier and have more money.

Sounds like you make a shed load more money than me Andy - I work 44hrs a week (even tho it's closer to 55, I don't get paid overtime
) for a sub £20k basic (plus a little performance related bonus - nothing to write home about tho), yet I have a new house, still way over £10k in savings, no debt (other than mortgage obviously), and some nice things in my house.....
However, I don't have a car, and have cut down my spending to a minimum - go out once or twice a week but don't get wankered or waste money on cabs etc, so don't spend a lot on an evening out (unless it's a specific do or whatever)
Dunno - maybe I am just carefull with money, and spend a LOT of my time working out what I can or can't afford
Must now give up smoking to free up another £45 a week
Save that for a year and it's a nice holiday I reckon!

I dont need love, not in the slightest. Call me shallow, but as long as there mint pussy, I dont need love, if I want someone to talk to, I got mates, if I want someone to fuck I turn to birds, the end.
And heath wont change regardless, and if i was minted id prob be dead in 9months, but id not be that arsed.
Reasons people feel they "need" a lot of things is they DO cause they not minted, or know they will need it at sometime.
If I was fucking minted, maybe im shallow, but I dont think id really "need" anything I could do anything about.
As im not minted I certainly need health, family, and when im old and cant get fit birds, ill need love too. Without the money you need a lot, id be fucked without it.
But if I was fucking minted? Id survive I think.

You are being seriously bum-fucked if you have to do 100+ hour weeks for your 60K
I earn 40K a year for 37.5 hours a week.
I've got mates who earn more than me, (one of them spent twelve years in the army, came out, made up the biggest load of bollocks about what he did in the army for his CV, then walked into a 55K a year recruitment job.) it's always good to try and better yourself, but why the fuck kill yourself trying?
It sounds to me that your CV would be pretty impressive anyway, so why not apply for something better?

But I meant with the 250 quid a day earning potential etc, all he needs to do is sack off the 20K fireman shite, and do 1 more day at 250 a week instead, and he is back to nearly the same money (which is good money IMHO) and for far less hours.

i think im gonna have to learn how to rob banks and get away with it
cant wait tho
it's not that I don't appreciate what I have, but I spose it's jealousy of the fact that other people get so much more in life, not just materially either, for putting less effort in. Maybe I should of gone to Uni and done the whole Degree thing. Good luck to the loaded ones out there though. It doesn't help with my poor finances having Becks at home with the little man either, but it's nice to know that they're happy. Thing is though, as I said earlier I've only got £80 in the bank, that's it, shit aint it. Sometimes I put a huge invoice in to Chubb and it goes within days, insurance, TV licence, mortgage. I just wanna drive my Skyline but can't afford to.
Cheers for all the comments tonight guys, it's making me think a lot about things. I wish that everyone in life got paid the same hourly rate, and the more you work, the more you get. Simple?
Off to bed now, even now I'm on call for Community Responding through my local Ambulance Service, and I do that for free!
Night all.

He like a lot of people with a one kid(s), a non working misses could live happily without any debt (apart from mortgage) on £30K but choose not to. Probably not the biggest house, going to be a shite car on the driveway etc but who cares as being happy and not poor IMO is better...
