just got a mk4 escort 1.3 as a run about. got it for £75, f reg, 85000miles, black and not alot of rust oh yeah and 10months tax. neway. u put it in gear and lift slowly off the clutch there is a whining noise, what do u reckon ? clutch plate, or bearing, or something else. nehelp would be apresiated

Not to sure mate, but if you do a search for Gearbox man on the internet and get his number, then give him a call, he would most likely tell you, he does alot of modded fords, so mention that he was recommended from the passion for site and pick his brain.

Is it a three door or 5 door, 3 door would mean you have a top little car to start modding.

Thrust bearings are commonly noisy on MK4's

They tend to make more of a light rubbing noise and not a whining noise though.
but if its totally dry of grease could whin.

Just read your first post again and you say its only when the clutch starts to engage.

That sounds more like perhaps the plate is wearing down to the rivets.

Does it feel like the clutch is about to give up?

When you sit there with the engine running and your foot fully on the clutch does it whine then?
Also when in neatral and you lift off the clutch does it do it then? Or only when a gear is selected?

The clutch plate did this on my cab. Only when we took it off did we see the lovely scores the rivvets had left in the flywheel
