is there a boot disk with the controller card? if so when booting from xp setup disk, press f6 key( i think it is) to boot up the controller card. it will ask for the drivers for the controller card so put the disk in. then it should see the drive and continue to install windows.

Have you installed the motherboard SATA drivers?
If not that's why it's not working.

If its a seperate controller card then the motherboard won't need drivers, the PCI controller card will.

You will probarly need to run 'diskmgmt' in the system32 folder of your windows install.

That will enable you to format the drive etc and make it visible to your windows install.

Hope some of this helps.

If the drive is shown in device manager then you need to partition and format it, assuming it's a brand new drive.
