I thought all the ZETEC used the "PIN" ? to set crank as my one does, then 8mm bar in cams.

To time a Zetec up safely you will need the timing pin kit......

Just use say some yellow paint with a little brush, mark a cam tooth and the casting directly behind it repeat for the other cam and crank pulley then when you release tension if it moves turn it back to the marks simple.

which zetec engine is it? if there are no marks it sounds like an se version which don't have wodruff keys to locate the pullys. if so you definately need a timping pin set to lock the engine otherwise things will bend

ive never used a pin,

on the escort and mondeo sump there is a flat plain, about the 4o'clock
position as said, line this up witht he 2nd notch on the crank pulley, or remove plug no.1 and use a socket extension you can see when the piston is at tdc. or use a dial indicator...

slacken the cam pulleys and use a 5mm thick bar to slot in the back of the cams and then fit the belt.

fit the belt and tension it as per the haynes manual etc (or if you buy a gen ford belt it comes with instructions) tighten everything up etc

and crank it over by hand and chack that the pulley lines up and the plate sltos int he cams.. if not, adjust till it does lol

Hellooooooo,

There is no pin on the silver top engines!!!

Only the blacktops have a crank locking pin.

So depends which engine you have.

No pin then if its silver top

Just line up the timing mark on the bottom pully with the triangle bit to the right of the bottom pully then off with the rocker cover insert the 5mm thick bar into the slots on the back of the cams remove belt and replace it (you really should do the full kit which will involve the pully replacements too dont just do the belt you will regret it)
