Default can somebody give me some advice on air filters PLEASE!

COME ON GUYS there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum, yes i know some of the questions asked may seem stupid to some, but those of you that have been there and done it should feel a sense of pride, that those amongs us who are mechanically challenged are putting our trust and faith in those who are experienced, so with that in mind could someone please cruise to the bottom of this thread and glance your experienced eye over one of those (probably) stupid questions, and try and give me a response thank you.

Hi everyone I am wanting to put a stainless steel cat-back exhaust onto my Focus 1.8i zetec but i am not sure which one will give me the best sound and value for money my top 5 choices are
1-Magnex
2-Peco
3-Janspeed
4-Mongoose
5-Milltek
There was a 6th which was the DNX but i don't think they do a cat-back most sites have it as a rear muffler, so can anyone give me some advice on which one to go for, i thank you in anticipation of any help or advice anyone can give me....Cheers

I don't know i remember my early youth cruising in my Mk3 2.0L cortina OHC Kent engine with twin webers K&N bolt on and a cherrybomb exhaust sprayed black those were the days, now it all seems so complicated, i swear i don't know my arse from my elbow when i lift that bonnet up lol.....

Milltek is the best sounding, and by far the best quality and the best power results.

Hi, well Milltek is winning by 2 to 1 but i'm still leaning towards Magnex, i just don't want to pay out all that money to not be happy with the sound as i want it to be really deep and bassy, there is a Scooby that goes buy at 6 every morning and its sound is that deep that my DG windows and door vibrates and the ground rumbles, now i'm a realist i know my 18i is never gonna sound like that but even if it had half that sound i'd be happy thinking of sound still thinking and thinking some more worshipping the sound of the Scooby LOL

So you want it to sound like a Nova?

At the end of the day, its your decision. If you want good power gains, head for the Milltek. Perhaps you won't get the same sound as other cars, but you get what you paid for.

Milteks are nice... on Golf R32's! Had one on my old car, but for a Ford I don't think you can beat a Magnex, I love them.. the fit the sound it's all just right. I had a Magnex on my FRS and I loved it.

I'd avoid Scorpion like the plague.

Hi, i saw a bloke with a focus 1.8i with a peco cat-back stainless steel system on at the shops and that sounded the biz does anyone know anything about them i know they come with a lifetime warranty and for my car its only 192.99 plus p&p and they claim modest power gains, i've done some research on the Milltek and the best performance gains are for the FRS, i suppose if i went for the full monty you know 4-2-1 sports cat and system it would probably be a worth while investment but i haven't got a spare 1000 pound sitting around and i don't think i could justify it to the mrs especially when modding the focus is a joint effort

Hi everyone, cheers guys i think its definitely going to be a toss up between Magnex and Peco, i must admit Milltek are good but i feel you need the whole hog maybe one day when funds are a bit more available, as i do have plans like kent cams, new throttle body and bluefin to name but a few but that that won't be for another year or so, so for now i will be happy with the sound slight increase in throttle response that minor mods give, rather than load of performance.... does anyone know anything about FSE power boost valves and Ecotek valves and would they be a worth while addition?

Hi everyone, well i'm still undecided about the exhaust i did think about having a Powerflow fitted but a) i don't know how much they are and b) i am sure there was an earlier thread on here and someone said they were rubbish, i would have liked a Magnaflow but they cost and as far as i know there isn't that many stockist in the UK... I do have something else i would like to ask i have also been dithering over which induction kit and i'm thinking about the st170 snorkel 2.0L auto air deflector and either a K&N panel filter or the DNX, but apparently the 1.8i air box will require minor modifying so i thought, would the st170 air box and throttle body fit my 1.8 and would it be an improvement, otherwise i think its going to be the Viper kit, any advice or opinions greatly appreciated...

Cheers

Hi everyone, well found out air box will fit so i am on the lookout for an st170 air box, still no news on whether the st170 throttle body will fit, and does anyone know if the exhaust manifold from an st170 will fit a 1.8i fastford said it will fit directly onto the 2litre but didn't say anything about the 18, any help much appreciated guys.. Pumaspeed do a throttle body for the 18i its a 65mm one so surely if the st170 is the same size it should fit straight on.

Cheers

Hi everyone, can anybody tell me if its worth my while to keep trying to get a ST170 air filter housing to connect up the ST170 snorkel properly or is modifying my standard 18i air filter housing going to be good enough, or i was considering cutting up a paint tray and making a kind of washer to go on the inside to create a decent seal, any ideas please.. thank you

i had a scorpion full sytem and de-cat pipe made by peco on my old 1.6 and on the FRS using a mongoose and decat, jst saving the Łs for a PD manifold.
not had any issues with either. the scorpion had a nice sound to it, deep burble and made lovely popping noises when backing off the throttle.
peco have a lifetime warranty on the stainless systems but have been known to have dodgy internals.
best bet in my opinion would be milltek, magnex or mongoose (blue flame).
all three seem to fit really well. never had any fitment issues with all three on any car..
as for the ST170 manifold. yes it will fit but you will need a de-cat pipe to be made up to connect the manifold to the rest of the system. not majorly expensive though.
just a case of hunting on ebay or round scrapyards for the manifold.
not sure if the ST170 TB will fit but will certainly av a dig round and let you know.
for induction its all a matter of ŁŁŁŁŁ's and style of driving.
snorkel, ST airbox and panel filter for round town driving to stop the heat soak from the engine getting in the filter and warming up the IAT (inlet air temp).
for out of town driving a cold air induction kit like the K&N gen 2 or pipercross viper as there will be plenty of nice cool air being fed up the pipe into the engine.
all down to individual preference.

YEEEE AAAAHHHHH my ST170 snorkel, auto air deflector and ST170 air box are all on the way, now just to make up my mind about which air filter to use, i am thinking about either DNX or Green as they are both washable and because i read on here that the oil from K&N and Pipercross can sometimes interfere with the air sensor, i was also considering wraping a heat shield around the snorkel to keep the air cold, does anyone know if this is a good idea or not.. cheers everyone...

Cheers kk i am definitely going for the cat-back Peco and eventually a 4-2-1 and a sports cat as i cannot be arsed changing it over at MOT time, mind you i have heard that some people who have a similar system to yours and have an Ecotek fitted have actually reduced their emissions, my only dilemma now is what air filter to fit with a complete ST170 induction system...

If you have the full ST170 induction system then your going to want a panel filter and there is not much difference in them all, K&N would be best though as there a great quality.

Yeah i was going to go for the K&N panel but i heard a few rumours that sometimes the oil messes up the MAF sensor so if thats the case its either a GREEN or DNX which i know nothing about any suggestions???
