Default retrieving a private number plate bk from dvla

approx 15 yrs ago my dad owned a s2 rs turbo that he brought new. he had put a private numberplate on the car but unfortunutly the car was stolen and never found. now ive got a s2 i really want the plate for my car. when i rang dvla the plate was still registed to my dad but they wanted proof that the car was mot, taxed and that my dad didnt claim for the plate. we have no way of proofin these things now as it happened 15 yrs ago.

has anyone got any advise they cud give me or has anyon e else had the same problem before?

At the time you would have needed a letter off the insurance company saying they had no claim on the plate. You would then have needed to put it on retention for the last 15 years

Explain the situation to the DVLA and then make them an offer for the plate.

You never know you might find someone there who actually has an element of common sense and do you a deal on it.

I would guess legally, as the insurance company paid out on the car, if it had of turned up the car would have been theirs, if your dad didnt include the value of the plate in his claim or make any provision for the return of the plate then that was an unfortunate oversight on his part.

But the fact remains, technically the plate would have been the property of the insurers along with the car.

On the positive side of things they havent just stuck it back in the pot and sold it off at one of their auctions.
