The problem actually is a Sony problem.... Any laptop using a certain batch of batterys made by Sony is at risk of explosion a large majority of laptops from ALL producers were recalled, including compaq, hp, apple and others....
The Dells were the ones most widley known because they had purchased the vast majority of these battery cells.

If you do have a 'smoking' compaq... give them a call and they are most helpfull in obtaining you a new one expecially if you mention lost data, legal action, contacting the press etc
