Default Performance Fords beat the Dorf, how come?.......

Just looking at cornering speeds and times set on the 'table of truth' and noticed that Scotty’s recorded speed through all corners with the exception of one was slower than the 'dorf' (obviously the weather conditions made the car a bit of a handful ) but one corner is recorded at twice the speed. Is this a mistake or did he go straight past the cones rather than through them? Not a diss at Steve (he's a good friend ) as we all know he can peddle a car well, just curious.

Hi Martin

the fastest i went though that chicane @ the back straight in the wet was 50+ and took the cone clean out dragged it under the car the car understeerd really bad

it's very very tight chicane i struggled loads of times too get it right
i had about 25laps in total

I did an un official time of 1min 34.6 in the wet when i totally missed the chicane due to another car in the way that was there testing

What was your speed through it without killing cones?

No ,i killed one cone at that speed 50+ drivers side wheel went on top of it

so basically i was in the chicane .... it's very hard to get right theres no room for error at all , i would have been a bit slower if i never flatend the cone , probaly about 36/45 mph to do it 100% right

theres another corner i couldn't get right at all i kept scrubbing of speed off was the last corner before the start /finish striaght

every other corner i can manage flat out and did go flat out

i done me best and im well happy with a 145 bhp car semi track car

i just wish it was dry i would have beat the focus st time i was only few seconds slower in the wet

i cant tell you the time see it in the mag next week or the week after

What rumours are these? Could they possibly be ones started by people that have never seen the circuit or how the feature is run?

I can assure anyone that thinks that, that it is complete rubbish. I have personally set out the cones for every single Beat The ST feature, bar one. And unless someone is cunningly sneaking in to Bruntingthorpe and moving the paint marks in the middle of the night, they are in exactly the same place for each and every driver.

As for the differences in times and corner speeds, yes corner speeds do count for a lot, but so do the straight bits in between. Yes Steve was a touch slower through some of the corners due to his R888 tyres and Monsoon like conditions, but the Cosworth powered Fiesta was faster down the straights than the Focus ST which is where it got the time back, along with the speed through the chicane which also helped a lot and had a lot to do with the driver. Look at previous features, the only other person to get near the same speed through the cones was a race driver in a race car – Kind of tells you something!

Marco's times were very impressive considering the power output and build cost of the car, but I can assure you (and him), that on his fastest full lap, ie the one that was counted, he didn't touch the cones, I know because I was sat in the car right next to them to make sure. He did clip it on previous laps, and smashed one to bits on another, but the rules are, if you hit the cone the lap doesnt count.

As for who the Dorf is, yes we did have a race driver based in our office at one point, and incidentally he sat opposite me.
But, if we wanted to have a mysterious, unknown driver that would keep everyone guessing his identity, it wouldnt be very bright to use a friend of ours that used to be the Editor of the mag would it?!
Come on people, give us some credit, we're a little bit more imaginative than that!

Right, I've got work to do, have a good day people

Nick,
Can you please clarify why all the other corner speeds achieved by Steve were LOWER than the ST (due to the wet), yet the tight chicane which relies on the most grip (which would be very hard to achieve in the wet with 888s) is some 30mph (IIRC) faster?

To be honest I don't know, I put it down to the driver.
Both cars that have achieved that speed have been driven by experienced race drivers, something which I am not, and therefore couldnt tell you exactly how they did it.

Something worth noting though is that both cars that were fast through there were Fiestas, so are considerably shorter than other cars that have attempted the circuit (along with the ST), and both drivers slid the car sideways through that part of the circuit giving them a straighter exit and enabling them to get on the throttle a bit earlier.
Which could be the answer, or could be complete rubbish! I don't know, phone Scotty and ask him?

i have done it and i cannot believe that they get that fast through there, very good driving indeed

sideways too.

if you put it another way...

me......1.30.0
Steve..1.30.0

my laps were in the dry and Steves in the wet,my times faster around every corner except the chicane and one were the mic is ( i had to slow down there due to noise levels )

So Steve done very well in the wet, but how was his time the same.

its down to better set up,later on the brakes, maybe more power and of course being better at driving.

this actually came from the mouth of someone who drove the course , but now we know the truth we can take the piss fr being a driving miss daisy

Not forgetting to mention that ST's are awsome cars as standard, so with a good driver the lap times will be hard to beat...
excellent mag btw -cheers, wil

Nick,

If it was down to the drivers ability then surely this would be reflected in an increase on all the corner speeds!

and to throw us off the trail, you kitted him out in a very distintive race suit that was last seen being fitted to keith wood in an article in track and race cars.

Konichiwa to all here at the Passion Ford Dojo!

I am very pleased to read Mr Cookie Boy Hadland has also spotted wild corner speed claim printed inside Magazine Ford Performance. 30mph quicker in the wet? Ford Magazine Performance dishonour the Dorf's name!

Ancient proverb handed down from Father is fall down seven times, get up eight. I challenge Performance Magazine Ford to battle showdown at National Day for all to see the mystical magic known as… The Dorf!
