Our new place is blessed with a truly awful exposed stone fireplace

The front room is long and narrow, so I want to make the most of the space by not having a chimney breast. It's a terraced house so this leaves me with a problem regarding where I put the flue.

I've been considering a flueless gas fire, but am concerned that there wont be enough air coming into the room to allow it to draw properly, and there is nowhere for the condensate to go.

Obviously I'll fit a CO detector to keep an eye on the catalyst...

Am I likely to have problems with the above? My mate reckons these things are best avoided

Are there any alternatives - perhaps a fire that only needs a small diameter flue?

aslong as you have a bigger room area than it states and a window that can be opened, that is all you need, 100 % eff as well, some do need an air vent fitting but not all, just make sure you get the right one for the room and you will have no problems with it

 

The room size is only 20.5m˛ so I think we might struggle - the ones I'm finding on the net are looking for 30m˛...

hate to put a downer on the idea but from a pure saftey point of view i wouldn't. im a plumbing and heating engineer and have heard of and seen some nasty installations. mind you could just be nature of the job

there are other options, have you considerd under floor heating expensive outlay maybe but dependand on type fitted can be a lot cheaper to run than you think.

out of interest have you got central heating?

 

Yeah it has a combi boiler

I guess I just like a fire really, kind of a focal point to the room

if fitted correctly then go for it but do errr on the side of saftey

 

just had a look at the corgi book it does not go in to detail on flueless appliances and just says follow manufacturers instructions but to be honest a wouldna especially if its a fuel efect one coz ats just asking for trouble

 

You can get fan flued gas fires where the flue goes straight out the back and needs no additional air, but as you are in a terraced house I guess your neighbours won't want the flue coming out in the middle of their lounge wall

u need 100cm2 free air ventilation up 22.7kw and 55cm2 for every kw above 2.7kw on top off the 100cm2

 

small room then you could still have one but would need air vents in the wall which would let in so much cold air that you will need the fire on all the time just to keep warm sounds like a fan flue fire to me would be best but one which you can run the flue out off the side ( not the back ) as then you might be able to get it out side ok

Yes, there's a chimney breast and flue already in there.

I'm starting to go off the idea of the flueless TBH - it simply doesn't sound safe in that size room.

I'm sure I was told about fires with 20mm flues but I can't find owt on the net about them
