Default What are 4x4 Saff cossies like as a B road driver???

As title, jus wondering what the Saff Cos 4x4 was like on the twisty b roads, I live in a place with very few straight roads so need something easy to drive but still good fun on the twisty stuff..

I ask because I think I have sold my Series 2 rst and the only choice I can think to move onto is a Saffy....

please discuss....even if you think the 2wd or 3 door would be better!

I find my saff very good on twisties, plenty of grip due to good tyres, poly bushes etc.infact shes a daily driver and i still love driving it on a daily basis.

i love mine on the b roads.just make sure you get a good suspension set up,polybushes and a pukka set of tyres!

the 4wd is alot nicer to drive than a 2wd as far as refinement.2wd are more fun and entertaing but not as usere friendly on the back roads.

but i willsay be wary of the back end if its stepping out.when they go they are ok but when they snatch they are unpredictable nasty fuckers.where as the 2wd is more predictable in a slide and easier to control.

hope that helps. obviously an evo will blitz a saff round the twisties if it has a reasonable driver, but a cossie has to have a good driver to go well

Its when you come off the power they snatch, its all about having the bottle to keep ya foot on the floor when going round a corner/roundabout

Not much of a fair comparison though is it, a saloon car compared to a french wankie go cart box on wheels, I know which one I'd rather be in when it comes to a shunt

Just trying to give a bit of perspective. People can get blinkered about their own cars - especially if its soomething like a Cossie.

Personally I think the Sierra Sapphire as a car was a pile of shite. Nothing but a glorified Cortina.

LOVE the Cossie bits though!!

Yeah but a cossie is a cossie, I think sierras and escorts are shite cars but if its a cossie its a different kettle of fish, I've been around for a while and driven a wide range of cars, from hot hatches, all the well known brands to big cruisers and never been blinkered about anything, I've always loved Fords and Cosworths came out when I was a teenager, that's where my love affair with them stems from

i have had 3 2wd sierras in 3dr and sapphire guise and i decided to try a 4x4 sapphire cosworth...after a week i sold it as i was far from impressed...the 4x4 was in good running condition but always felt like it was using a lot of power to drive the 4x4 system, and i was always checking the handbrake wasnt on !i also found that the gearing wasnt very good and on twisty hilly roads around my way it struggled...i then bought a 1994 imprezza type ra running around 300bhp and believe me,if you test drove one after a 4x4 cosworth, you would buy the subaru

i wouldnt bother with a 4x4 then,2wd is far far better in regard to performance and driveability from my experience and less likely to break

I for one would certainly not buy a scooby doo, I think the engine layout is fucking awful, boxer engine poo! If I was ever gonna sell my car which I don't think I ever will cos it owes me a lot of money, but if I was gonna buy a rice rocket it would be an evo 7/8 fq 300

The engine layout is to lower the centre of gravity but does create access problems,i would definately buy a imprezza over a evo as if you get the right one, they are very alike in performance with much lower running costs...my old type ra was 300bhp and around 1050 kg if i remember rightly, and was noticebly quicker where it counts against my 350bhp 2wd sapphire...a lot of people do not like imprezzas because they havent driven one

Fair point but what you gotta remember is cosworths are getting old, they are old cars, you are comparing up to date technology with cars that for many are over a decade old, but still compared to like vehicles today and still give em a run for their money

dont get me wrong,i love my rs's and owned my first(mk2 rs2000) in 1983 i have since had 23 more rs's but im not blinkered,as hopefully,im soon to be buying a imprezza p1...i was just giving a honest answer to the original question which was something easy to drive and good on twisty b roads, and a type ra impreza is better than any rs for ease of driving and covering point to point quickly.

oh dear here we go agin, another slagging match,

my thoughts?
pug 205?great car, love em!ive had a 205 with an mi-16 in.a proper tool.quicker enough to stay happily with a carrera 4 upto 150mph.scarey at that speed but so much fun.handling was great but a bit twitchy cos of its small size.

the sccobies? as for the comment of if you test it?nah thanks.i had the use of a 2001 wrx ra myself when i wanted and tbh.its not my thing.unexciting and not near my 350 bhp saff, dont care what you say!the ra runs out of puff early.but still a nice car just not for me

evo's...love em but high running costs so puts me off.got to be 6 8 or 9 though.7 was too bland

im not blinkered in the slightest i just like a car with character

and i may be adding another 205 1.9 gti to my cars as a run about......lets see how long i can last before i mi that too

Why, why why did I sell my 405Mi16 for Ł350?!!

Oh yeah, cos I bought the cossie and needed the space!

Thinking about it - the 205 would go almost anywhere flat out - you would speed up for the corners

But I am getting to the bends 30 mph faster in the Cossie.

Thats why I dont think Im going to get round the fookers!

ooohhh such a shame.i couldve had that and ripped it apart to chuck in a 205!
have to say it was a cracking little car.and it did seem to make you drive it faster all the time.
the only car thats impressed me that hasnt had a turbo.well cheap car anyway.

must admit my saff would kill it on a motorway but i still love them.hope i can do another.the insurance is the same as my megane 1.6 so guess whats getting booted out!
