Default Do diesels use more oil than a petrol engine ?

Bought a Focus TDDi last week, 100k miles but full service history, well maintained etc.

Went to Bootle today for work and back, 400 mile round trip at 70/80mph. Heard that diesels do use more oil than a petrol so checked the level when I got back and whilst it had dropped a bit (not alarmingly so) but I did have to top it up.

Normal for a diesel ?

Anyone else any experiences ? I'm a bit of a big mileage merchant and if the engine effectively changes it's own oil once a month with the amount it uses the cars of no benefit to me...............

100k miles....

I think youy have answered your own question!

Remember engines are designed to use oil!

I'm not expecting it not to use any at all, my Fiesta used to use a bit with the mileage I was doing but I was told that diesels do use more. Just wondered if others have any experience and how it compares to a petrol engine.

well it willl

all engines do!!

you need to lubricate valves and rings... to do that you loose some into the combustion chamber.

How much depends on deisgn and on condtion!

Have to say Nath the Focus went like a dream - did 400 miles on Ł36 of diesel...........better on a run than my 1.25 Zetec Fiesta which I wasn't expecting if I'm honest.

Approx 45mpg isn't too bad as long as you were'nt tickling along doing 56mph (that would be so unlike you )

Is this the one you bought a short while ago on another thread?

Sounds like a good guy have you checked theres not a minor leak anywhere or a pipe spitting it out under pressure. Also be careful when you change the fuel filters as the bastard pipes on top have a tendancy to snap and become expensive for what they are
