Flicking rev counter/car not running....help!!

Flicking rev counter/car not running....help!!
AArgh!!
Car was running sweet for about an hour this afternoon then decided to cut out.
After restarting it, it would run for a bit then cut out again.
The rev counter has started goin a bit crazy, and when started it will run for a bit til i put my foot on throttle then it misfires and dies.
What is it that causes the rev counter to go crazy?? Would it be a phase sensor prob, crank sensor, or ign module problem??
Anyone??? Its currently abandoned outside the house...AARGH!!!
