cosworth turbo damper question bolting the turbo solid

Default cosworth turbo damper question bolting the turbo solid

can a turbo damper on a cosworth be bolted up solid to the turbo and the to the rocker cover like the bailey one but with out the rose joint bit and just have a simple adjusting rod. as I cant see whey you would want any part of the damper to flex. more info or would be nice as looking at a pic of Karl cosworth he has a turbo damper that looks to be bolted up solid but not sure thanks

yes you can but you will need a spacer like a pice of ally tube or a load of washers(which looks gash) or some good washers and a smaller bolt.... just be carefull not to bend the bracket on the turbo when you do it up...

i hear what your saying but i am going to make one from scratch with stainless steel solid bar and tube a bit like the bailey one but one to suit my manifold and turbo

iam not sure on this,but doesnt the hanger have to move to allow for expansion of the manifold when its glowing red hot?

if I use a rose joint would it not just pivot.what exactly is the damper suppose to do take wait off or stop the turbo rocking as the bailey one looks like it will just pivot

The damper's there to take up the torque the turbo creates as it spins - ie, it's there to stop the turbo twisting itself off the head.

yes i know but the rose joint that the bailey damper has it will just pivot as the bearing will allow the twist movement or am i not right

as above. the std damper has a specific job to do.

others that you have seen are more turbo supports, rather than dampers to take some of the weight of big turbo's off the manifold

ok so the ones bailey sell are more turbo suport but i still cant see how it will carry any weight if its got a rose joint on it as it will pivot and pull away may be its just me need to have better look at it

The standard manifold is amply strong enough to support the turbo's weight under all operating conditions.

ok this is what i have done so far i have made a nice turbo damper /support but not sure on the end i should use ie a rose joint or weather to bolt it up solid to the turbo what do you think

why the manifold i gess its to stop it cracking but once the turbo is supported shouldnt that be all that is needed

this tubular manifold hasnt cracked before, and its lasted 9yrs.

so im just going to copy the design for mine, cant use the one that was originally used as it was design for a 2wd head and i dont have the lugs on the head to mount it the same.

You are trying to support a Turbo not hold it solid. Lots of temp differentials & vibrations going on, must have 'give' somewhere or something will snap/crack.

If it's any help, here's the answer I got from Bailey - I asked how it works differently to a standard turbo damper:

It is designed to offer superior support for the turbo, as the standard Ford dampers wear quickly and service parts are now quite difficult to get. It mounts on three of the standard cam cover bolt fittings and comes with a pair of spherical adjustable joints to get the tension correct (instructions included). As it uses the came cover fixing bolts, these means that it will fit both 2wd and 4wd heads/cam covers, but not the later type Escort Cosworth silver cam cover.

That is what it is SUPPOSED to do, so that it will allow for the growth of a tubular manifold, whilst still providing the support required. If it has no freedom of movement (it will be mm's), then it WILL crack. So it MUST be rose jointed.

I would personally modify a Bailey one to suit your application.
