Default what to get with 3k

want to get a car

21 with 3 yrs ncb no claims no points in my whole life!

have 3k to spend, or atleast will have.

a mates offered me his mazda mx3 with a 2.5 engine, it does 210hp without turbo or supercharger, has coilovers, but its not going to get any more powerfull without mega tuning.

other candidates are

escort rst
fiesta rst
mondeo st24
and the car id really like - sapphire 2wd or 4wd

but 3k isnt much to buy a good sapphire with is it.

id like to buy a car already modified so i just have to spend money on insurance etc, servicing and running it.

what advice can you give for me.

heres the mazda:

If you really have your heart set on a cossie, save up abit more and get one!
If you get something else, you will always be thinking "I wish I had got the cossie...."

That is too true. I went to buy a 4x4 Cosworth and ended up buying an Integrale in 1999 and always wished I'd held out for a Cosworth.

I finally bought a 2 wheel drive Cosworth 2 and a half months ago and it's only proved that point I've owned an integrale as stated, a Subaru & driven many Subarus and evo 6's but the Cosworth was the most fun car I'd driven so I bought one and I love driving it.

For many reasons I should have bought one in the first place.

I'm gonna say, Volvo 850 T5, can spend Ł2k on a half decent one then another Ł1k tuning it and you'll have 300bhp that'll be very reliable and be quite quick aswell. Only problem they look a bit boring.

Vectra SRi?
Golf VR6?
Audi A3 1.8t?
Puma 1.7? - As girly as they look everytime i drive one i can't help thinking what a bloody good car they are and for the 2-3k they fetch these days a bit of a bargin really.

hi
what about a astra gsi with the turbo engine (i know is not a standard fit ) you can pick them up for under 3k and there very fast and look pretty good to. plus aren't to bad to tune stage 3 in a standard looking car would be a real sleep too.

Did alright there mate ! Loose the mirrors and petrol cap cover thingy though. Nice striaght looking car from the pics though My mate bought a standard RWD Saff, with tidy leather, 10 mth Mot, 4 mth tax, pretty clean really, it aint perfect but Ł2000, from local feeads! Bargains are out there. Whats the insurance like for someone of 21? Try & find a Ins Co that will cover you on a classic/collectors policy. I have one with Norwich Union. I know some wont cover under 25's, but my S1 RS Turbo is Ł170 yr fully comp! Beat that!! Worth a look me thinks!

Defo don't blow the budget on buying the car. 3K won't get you a lot of performance car that isn't going to need some money throwing at it at some point in the not too distant future.

Also remember when you get the car, you will be driving it everywhere so fuel will usage will be high too. You may get lucky and have a car that will last a few months with no money needing to be spent but chances are even if that happens, there are still the normal consumables like tyres etc plus servicing. Not a cheap hobby but good luck in the search.

get yourself a tidy Rst fiesta or Escort, they are fun, cheaper to insure than the cossie and cheaper to repair

Or u could opt for a Escort GTi, (Ł1300- that i have for sale)

200quid on a Volvo 360 with an MOT and decent clutch.
50quid welding the diff.
200quid on uprated shocks, springs, and lowering blocks.
100quid on a complete Volvo 740/940 turbo engine/loom/ecu from a scrappy.
30quid on a cossie intercooler and a bleed valve.
100quid on a second hand bucket and harness and strip the interior.
150quid knocking an exhaust up at powerflow.
150quid for an engine crane and spanners to do the swap.

Happy days, a great handling, large powerband, 1000kg, 200bhp+, 2 or 2.3 litre turbocharged, RWD car for a grand or so, and no difficult jobs needed doing.

Its easy with em, 340s you use Renault engines as they bolt straight in (there a good few 1.7 turbo or Clio 16V/Williams engined ones in the UK), or you do the traditional Sweedish (and more sensible IMO) route of buying a 360 then pretty much any Volvo engine goes straight in.

If only I could read Sweedish, as their Projects forum has some mad shit going on...

Id say even at 21 with your ncb etc youd be looking at a fair price for insurance on these as the only ones in this country are imports

I had an evo 3 before my saff cosworth , go with the cossie , deffo more fun to drive , love it

id personaly go for either a 2wd saff or esc rst for that kind of money. for 3k you can find a real tidy straight example of either as long as you are prepared to walk away from the dogs out there (about 90% lol). ive just sold a 90 spec series 2, 4 owners, 70k with fsh, never welded, drove like new for Ł2400 and imo it was a bargain (although was completely standard) good luck with the car hunt!

S14 200SX, or a ST185 GT4, or an MR2 Turbo. Cosworths are group 20, pretty sure what i've mentioned (and early Scooby's) are group 17-18

I'm guessing then that it's the same engine they put in the Mx6 and probe.

It's all down to personal taste and what you feel comfortable with. If you feel comfortable in a Tigra look-alike that is essentially a car that only 15 year old girls will give you any tiny scrap of respect for, then go for it!

However, it sounds like budget is an issue rather than just having the dandiest car at the local youth club, in which case buy a CRX.

You won't lose as much money on it and you'll be able to get parts for it off the shelf [not spend days posting up pictures of engine parts on websites so you can order the right bits because the car in that spec was never sold in this country].

theres a fair few good cars at 4k maybe i can save a bit more for 4k.

car is garaged at home in brick and mortar garage with reinforced steel electric doors lol so theft isnt a problem either!

quite like the idea of the volvo, would the 850 t5 engine fit ? 300hp with rica chip but how would you convert it to rwd ?
