Default S2´s with cts stg2 box

my S2 run 100km/h (62,5mph) @ 3k revs with a cts stg.2 box...

but my friend cab, with complete RS running gear, runs 120km/h (mph) @ 3k revs

can this be true.. I would like to lower the revs a bit when cruising @ 50-60mph, cause the mongoose is quite loud.. and also I would like a bit more topspeed.. cause as it are now, with 62,5mph @ 3k revs.. its running 125mph @ 6k revs.. and then there arent many revs left...

am I on to someing here.. please help

cheers

Are you sure both RPM-gauges are correct?

You'll more than likely find that the difference is in the final drive ratio of the box's.

Tombra: no... the RSt RPM gauges are not the best...

I was just wondering if the final drive in the CTS box were different from the std box... as Andy R mentioned

Default cts stage 2 box

the longer fith gear ratio was an option with all new cts stage 2 or plus box's. The buyer would have had to ask if he/she wanted it and i think it was at an aditional cost however am unsure. The final drive on an escort s2 rst is perfect in my opinion and i think the majority opted for the standard ratio, the best way to tell is:
look at the stamp on the box, its on the bellhousing above where the amal valve attaches, then phone cts and they will have the full spec

p.s i wouldnt trust your standard rev counters unless you have had them both calibrated.

gambit: thanks mate... I will take a look that stamp... I dont know if the longer fifth gear ratio was an option when I bought mine.. I think its 3 years old now

however.. the RS should produce a bit more power next summer, so I would like the gearbox to run about 155mph

A standard RS turbo Series 2 box gives 23.5mph per thousand in 5th. This is exactly 70mph at 3000 or 112kph. The standard speedo is a little fast, so will probably show 120kph. It looks like you have the Series 1 geabox, which is lower geared.

The standard 1.6 CVH geaqrbox has a 3.55 final drive, which gives 120kph at 3000rpm.

yes they do - above figures are for standard wheels and tyres.

Thw differnce to other wheels is quite small compared to the jump in final drives

Just for information purposes,
I had std wheels and box, the car hit the standard rev limiter at 6200 and my GPS speedo would show 137 mph.

6200 is 148mph on a standard S2.

sheps
That would be 30mph 1000....very high geared. Not sure what the ratio's are on a diesel box.

I have 205/40-17 on my S2

but Rick.. when you said S1 box, I just remenbered.. once I got my CTS box, I hit the limiter 6,25 mph earlier in every gear I think.. so I am possible running with a S2 box..

Rick: The standard 1.6 CVH geaqrbox has a 3.55 final drive, which gives 120kph at 3000rpm... anyone knowes what the S1 box have...

Im REALLY pleased with the box.. dont misunderstanmd me

The S1 box is 4.x - i'm sure someone will confirm, it;s similar to the Xr3i

It does sound a lot like you have the S1 final drive. S2 is 3.82

yes, very high geared, but for some reason it hits the readline just BEFORE 6k.bearing this in mind,i could still achieve over 120mph before hitting the readline in 4th.
but if i am in neutral, the revs will go all the way aroun to 7k,any idea on this?
also, when it was RR'd last month, peak power was at 5046rpm,something to do with the box??

You have 2 problems. 1st, you cannot rely on the standard rev counter. It can give different readings depending on how quickly the revs are changing.

2nd, its more than likely that the RR used your rev counter to calibrate the power run. THis cocks up the readings no end. Actual peak power is nothing to do with the box at all.

with my old gearbox I hit the limiter in 4th @ 125mph... and now its at a little under 120mph..

but I'll find out when I contact CTS with that number from my gearbox..

thank you all for the replies... I really helped me a lot
