preferably tom tom but are there others to recomend?
or do i wait till after crhimbo for the sales?
and do they all need a subscription or can you just buy one and be done with it?
other questions that i might want to ask if i had more money are:
what about all these ones that are fitted to cars as standard and talk about getting discs to update them with? is that a different kettle of fish altogehter?
and can i get something that will work with a tracker as well as having sat nav?
can i get soemthing like we've got at work where the tracker and the satnav and other wireless stuff like internet and that sort of malarkey all run from the same source?
etc
thanks

You buy one and you are done with it, but at a later date you will want to update it in a few years when the roads have changed a bit etc and there are new addresses.
I bought a navman in my local tescos recently as a temporary measure as the mrs taxed my tomtom off me, its defintely not as good, BUT it does still do the job (uk only) for 99 quid!

Best one i have seen for sub £200 is the tom tom one. I think this comes with an SD card whcoh would allow you to upgrade the maps (someone may be able to confirm?).
I used one last week for a day and thought it pretty neat, nice and slim and fits in top pocket. Would reroute quite quickly and was generaly very easy to use.
I am holding out until Jan/Feb and looking to buy a 710 or a 910, am hoping that these will drop closer to £200-£250 by then....hopefully.

Why not buy a PDA and run Tom Tom via that! Gotta be the way to go, at least then u can have the use of the PDA for other things aswell!

Can't fault Garmin, both me and my have got the same one and it's spot on, never let either of us down!
Depends on how much your going to be using it tbh?
I sell sat nav for a living btw.
Garmin I3 for the money is very good.
Tom tom One Uk is easiest unit to use on the market. Currently £199.
Navman F20 with full post code search and 3.5" touch screen is very good for the money £150.
Any of those depending on how technical minded you are and how much your be using it.

I found it to be (as with any PC) unreliable, tomtom sometimes randomly crashed or conflicted with other system files, sold it in the end, your best off with a dedicated satnav.

is this not the case then?

This is mine, driving NE along the coast road in barrow, my next turn is 8.8 miles away, the unit will count down the distance then when 500ft away it will zoom into the turn to make it easier to see. Mine got my from manchester to barrow-in-furness 2 weeks ago, then back again! took me just over 4 hours and it was spot on with its estimated arrival time.
