I used to use Castrol Rs 10-60 but was told it didnt protect the engine

when very hot so changed to Siloklene Pro-s 10-50 and seems fine at the

moment but my engine has only covered 2000 miles on a rebuilt engine

would go for a very similar grade and you will be just fine

Default oil

Mate mobil 1- 15/50w is THE only oil for cossies, mobil 1 used cossies in the testing of it.

i run 10 60 castrol and my engine is very quiet..have done for 10k miles

does anyone on this thread understand what the numbers mean?

if your engine is noisy on start up a thinner oil (when cold) 10w will be better.

As for the castrol not protecting the engine when hot again a thicker oil when hot ie a 60 rather than a 50 will be thicker and less likely to break down so will protect better at higher temps

As above,Mobil 1 Motorsport or Silkolene are whats recommended by Oilman off here

Deffo says not to use Castrol RS 10 60

Do a search on here for posts by Oilman, hes done a write up explaining all the numbers on oils

Which ever you decide on,buy it from him, great service to your door

I had similar noises on start up and changed my oil to Silkolene Pro S 10w-50.

A bit pricier, but no noise at all now.

i have spoken to oilman a few times about oils..

he says that the silkolene is the best quality oil and thats what he recommends...

He told me that Castrol is a good oil and suitable for my car but the silkoene is better.

Silkoline aint that special and is known to make ur tappets rattle there tits off !!!

Im speaking from experiance here

i used castrol rs for years and no problems with it

also used others with no probs

i think some peeps just enjoy silkoline cos its different colour and looks like blackcurrant juice thats going in and thats cool

oils are good in diff ways and some are better in engines depending on its condition in first place

Silkolene IS special as oil goes...
as to whether your tappets rattle their tits off is due to a number of issues.
Mine don't for example, on a 100k mile engine, but then tappets are new
The more important bit is that it maintains oil pressure under hard use when it's hot, without starting off like syrup to be able to achieve that

Wotever!!!!!!

As above, your tappets prob need replacing

Think Oilman/Opie oils have a bit more knowledge than you on what oils are good and not good

Default oil

Mobil 1 15w/50w is the ONLY oil to use. Granted it costs a lot but U get what U pay for, Its also used in high reving F1 cars which rev to 20.000 rpm so its up to the job of high performance

Mobil1 is far from the ONLY one... if it's the one you like, then that's fine it will perform well, but there are "better" oils out there for the same price.
Take advice from Oilman/Opie Oils, they will be happy to sell you whatever you want, including Mobil and Castrol, but they will also offer first class professional advice for your particular application and usage style and recommend the best oil available in each case - but ultimately they will be happy to sell you anything you wish

I wouldn't ever use Mobil 1 (note the correct spelling)

I'd got one step better and use Silkolene Pro R or Pro S or what I currently run Motul 300V Competetion 15w 50

Default oil

I use mobil 1 motorsport 15/50 its done a good job in my cossie and my rs turbo. on the subject of cam follower rattle if using correct grade of oil its going to be the followers.I have built a few cossie engines the ones that had new aftermarket followers in started to make noise on start up again after abut a year.I was lucky enough to find a new set of kent cams ones on ebay cheap these are still quite even after months in the garage untouched

I always used (and still use) Castrol RS 10w60 in my cossies. Never had a problem, so it can't be that bad some people say.

Mobil 1 15/50 It's what I use and it has worked very well in both my Cossie and my brother's RST.

Cheap if you know where to get it from too

I'm sure Silkolene is good stuff, but I like the cheaper price of an oil that does the job fine. Hence Mobil 1.

how about valvoline 10w60?
i had a heat issue with castrol 10w60, and a cosworth tuner informed me that he uses Valvoline instead because that withstands temperatures up to 144 degrees celcius before burning up(changes within the oil and loosing lubrication properties) and castrol @116 degrees celcius.

(car is used on tracks only, even on hot summer days)
