i cant really make mind up as to which i prefere, which one would you go for, and why?

Personaly speaking i think that a decent s 1 looks a lot better than a s 2 its a mid 80 s icon , but becoming rare to find decent ones , hope this helps
As above, I prefer the S1 and personnaly would go for one but for the cash your looking to buy a decent RST for, the S2 would be more realistic for that kind of cash. Although you need to be carefull with both S1 & S2's... both are getting on now so make sure you check all the usual things before parting with your ££££'s.

S1 for me but try and stretch your budget but don't bother if you aint got a garage. 3k will buy a decent S2 but a S1 at that money will need work unless you are very lucky. Depends on what miles you are gonna cover too. You don't wanna be dragging a S1 up and down the motorway every day
I'd agree with all the points above, I personally would prefer a S1, but in your circumstances a S2 is the best way foreward.
Just make sure you get a decent solid one. I've seen far too many mates pay £3k for an RST and it needing loads n loads of welding for the MOT, because they didn't check underneath properly. One of my mates paid £3.5k for his, looked good on the outside, but closer inspection deemed it for the scrappies at the next MOT as it was that rotten, he was gutted.
If you see a solid one with a receipted engine rebuild for £3k, snap it up. That's what I did, I thought it far better to buy one that has a SOLID shell that needs a respray, than to buy a pretty one that needs loads of welding!
