structural rust rust and more rust, and there might be rust you can't see too

if you don't find any rust check for noisey engine leaks and bodged repairs.

if you find none of the above make sure all the lights and electrics work and the VIN numbers are correct.

and don't get caught up in how fast it feels because your better off buying a slow good one and doing the work yourself.

and HPI it

then you might get a good one.

Yup agree RUST! check back chassis legs especially.

Make sure the car is started from cold! If the car has a bit of piston slap, dont worry this is common on 2wd's and should go as soon as got a bit of heat are start driving! If it stays there then its fook.

Usual things like smoke etc. but make sure the car is cold when starting!!!!!

Oh and check for RUST!

I think that there is one thing that the above havent touched on at all, and it is more important than even the rust!

Check your bank balance, and your marital status. If you intend to use the car in the winter/ wet/ summer/ warm/ cold, then its gonna break - a lot!

You will need money, and then excuses as to why that money is not being spent on your better half.

PRactice saying "Of course I love you darling, but the car is important too, and I need it to get you presents etc. If I dont fix the car, I cant buy you anything, and neither of us would want that!"

Hope this helps

I was looking 4 months ago for my 3rd Cossie.....

Upto £3000...

WILL require work and imo lots of it

£3000- £4000

Bargains out there and more so the closest to the £4000 mark

£4000-£5000

Cars getting much better and expect some good choice mods/new parts or an engine rebuild the closer to £5000 you get

£5000 plus...

Cars with either lots of good tasteful mods and alot of new parts or a recent engine rebuild...

Like the rest have said RUST/ROT is the biggest problem and I'm sure most will agree you are better off buying a Cossie that needs maybe some mechanical work than a car with rust/rot issues and the latter can be very very expensive as you never know whats hiding beneath.... Buy more on condition than mileage....

I looked at 2 cars around the £4000 mark and both of them were actually complete sheds that had the owners been honest I'd have not bothered viewing!!!! Then I bought mine which imo compared to the other 2 was worth twice the £££

That is so true.

Spend as much as u can on buying the car, but be prepared to budget the same again for repairs.

I personally thought 'yeah right' to that ststement and so far the car has cost me 3k to buy, and is touching 10k on repaiirs over 2.5 years.

Be warned!!!

I have to admit, it is worth it when it goes and ur tearing down the m/way (ahem...test track) at 100+, 'specially when ur tanning evos worth 3x the money

Thats what makes me smile
