You need the number stamped on the front of the block just above the water pump and below the head gasket line
should start YBG for a red top (pre 92 emmisions spec) or YBJ for a green top( cat and lambda spec) for a 4x4 - the engines are the same its the bolt ons and ecu which differ

it doesn`t seem to have been ground of as there is little pit marks in the surface like from the casting process,it`s not as smooth as the picture makes out it is
could it possibly be a new block as TF says?
go on then whats the simple way of registering on an age related plate.
thanks for all the input guys

The man does have a living to make
i know he has a living to make, and i can imagine it must piss him off that people even think to buy things from somewhere else!
seriously though my point is that this guy was just asking for a bit of help/advice....and didn't need that kind of reply!?
better would have been;
" it looks like the number has been ground off,so maybe a dodgy engine block...probably best to talk to the guy you bought it off"

on my 2wd, the number was on the exhaust side of the block about 2/3rds back. engine number should be the same as the last digits of the chassis number if it was an original engine. if new engine, would not have a number stamped on
Simple to resolve mate if its a new block - and people are correct new blocks are unstamped.
Buy a set of stamps from Machine mart and stamp it yourself with a unique number- not illegal as you are not trying to hide an old number -and if the number you decide to stamp it with starts YBB or YBG then guess what its then a pre 92 spec engine for emmissions purposes so no cat required.
A lot of people use an early YBB block to also get around the emmissions regs for sva

i don`t mean to sound stupid here, but i know what grounding of an engine number entails.
there will be swirl marks left behind, mine has none.it is pitted as is the rest of the engine from the cast process, the picture shows it shiny but what with the camera flash and me cleaning only that area it would do.
can you really stamp your own number?
would it be worth contacting ford with the chassis/build number ?

the front number people are reffereing to is the build number for cosworth is it not, the letters are decribing what type engine is in it
now the number you have posted is the engine number, so this is on the vin tags, logbook etc
so surely sva will go buy that number, as when it comes back it will say what car it was from, year, colour, emissions etc
