Default Gearbox on its way out?

When driving at 30mph and dropping down in to 2nd to come to a stop when lifting the clutch a weird whine/squeel happens for a few seconds then goes....is this a sign of the gearbox on its way out?

What you've written isn't very easy to understand.

Squealing is usually a thrust bearing about to destroy itself though....

well when im driving along, say in 3rd gear and coming to a junction i drop it into 2nd gear. As i lift the clutch back in, a high pitched noise is heard which lasts for around 2 seconds. It does not make the noise at any other time other than when engine braking.

In that case it could be the clutch plate itself. When the clutch plate is worn right down to the rivets they can make this noise.

I'd say its the clutch either way. How old is it? Hard to pull off and/or select gears at all?

The car selects gears fine and pulls fine. however when im accelerating and i come off the gas it makes the noise and if i put the clutch pedle down it sounds like something spinning then stops. if i then raise the pedle it comes in again but as soon as i put on the gas the noise stops??

When chaing gear, for example going from 3rd to 2nd, when the clutch is down and i select 2nd, the noise happens for a very short period of time like a little blip, then goes. If i then raise the clutch to engage into 2nd gear i get the noise back.

Any idea? its really starting to annoy me that i cant work out what it could be

cheers

Is the car a front wheel drive? if so I'd say what's been said above is the problem rather than the box itself!

ps how old is the clutch?

How does it select 2 gears at a time thats virtually impossible???

You just want a 220mm clutch they all share the same fitment.

It just sounds like its mashing all the gears together :S going to replace the clutch first see if it fixes it, if not then new box.

I expect, from what you have said, the springs on the pressure plate have snapped, and its subsequently destroyed the thrust bearing (the squeaking was the bearing being slowly destroyed) and now you are crunching gears because the clutch isn't working.

If you start the car in gear can you stop the car by pushing the clutch in?(P.S trying this could lead to brown pants )

I bet the springs have snapped and destroyed the bearing.

Had the clutch been juddering/hard to pull off/stiff pedal?
