Default Help please, non starting Series 1, its alive...very alive!

My fiesta daily runner is gewtting some repairs done so its off the road for a bit but my S1 has now packed up as well.

So i though ok ill use the RS for nipping to work the rest of the week, just went out and it wont start , when i fire up the ignition lights though i cant hear the fuel pump doesnt prime so im assuming thats the prob, (if any of you have had the fuel relay go on your escorts youll know what i mean when i say it just cranks and nowt else.

can anybody tell what the causes for this can be? can a relay have popped out its socket? (i checked this and one had, it has started just before i cvame in to type this up) anything please guys if you can

thing is if its something starting to develop id rather sort it before it causes any damage.

And now its raining

trying to give up the fags as well so im stressed as it is

Cheers guys

Pete

Usually it's a dry solder joint inside the relay. Most of the time it can be fixed within minutes if you've got a good soldering iron and the skill to use it! :P

Evening guys, right its a new fuel relay and its no been cracked open, just tried it just now and the pump sounded wonky when it primed then it cranked the started to fire up then died and thats been it since.

Im pretty much certain its the pump from the sounds of it, are there any common faults with them or even better common solutions?

Has anyone else had the problem?

Any other ideas?

Thanks guys all help appreciated

I had a prob wi my s1, was firing up then dying, found it was the thermo time switch at the back of the inlet manifold, changed that and hey presto, starts and runs perfect.....

Pump sounds dodgy, or fuel pump relay. .

The relay will burn out and stop working if the pump is drawing too much current from what I know!

It's not cheep to try a new pump tho, just incase it isnt that, that's causing the problem.

if the relay primes the pump when ignition is turned to position 2, and the pump runs while cranking, and the car starts then I would rule out the relay

If the pump is sounding dodgy, or excesively loud, i'd take a look at that.

could however be power supply to the pump/wires/earth etc.

Best getting someone round with a multimeter and doing a few tests on the pump/wiring/relay etc and establish if any of these give dodgy readings

Sorry cant be of more help/more precise but it's really just a case of elimination

hope you sort it pete

Had trouble with mine a bit ago. When we were checking various things we found a silver box tucked up directly above the brake pedal . One of these wires gives a feed to the pump. I think it's the one with the spade connector a different way round to the rest. It may be loose. Might be worth a try

Does it start and die every time or sometimes does it not start ? If so,it could point to a dodgy distributor. That's what mine turned out to be

Another thing I can think of:

RST fuel pumps tend to cause trouble when there's only little fuel in the tank. So if it's almost empty fill it up a bit.

Yeah this happens to mine when it's low on fuel and the car is parked leaning to one side or facing downhill

Evening chaps,

Been away at my mums for tea watching the chelsea barca game

Dave thats what im thinking mate, my uncle is gonna go over the car with a voltmeter tomorrow while im at work and hopefully that'll help me eliminate some stuff, ill know then if im getting power to the pump. it shouldnt be the relay under the dash since thats fairly new, andy replaced that before i bought the car.

Pete & Dry, the cars on half a tank so im hoping the anti surge isnt being paranoid. the fuel pump should still prime though even if it is kicking in.

If im honest guys some of the electrics are shocking and theres always a niggle with them, the sidelights are also being a pest but im working on theat as well as an iffy indicator but ive got some holidays coming up so im gonna sort that.

Ill try all your suggestions either tomorrow or on the weekend so thanks VERY much for all the advice, ill keep you posted

Cheers

Pete

My Electrics are pretty bad too, it's running an S2 fuel pump relay/wiring. . and lods of other bits that look like a bowl of spaghetti. .

Had trouble with my lights, but jus dodgy connections and all sorted now!

would try and help some more but as I dont know what's standard and whats not it'd be a nightmare trying to figure out what could cause it

good luck

Right bit of an update....

Been on the phone to colin at AVA and he reckons the same. check the power to the fuel pump then check the relay.

Now ive been working on both cars today and i know this sounds funny but when i take out the small plastic shelf on the right hand side of the driver under the dash to get to the fuel relay(just above the drivers speaker) the car starts no problem. but when i put the shelf back in it wont prime

I know it sounds rediculous but can i be disturbing anything in there?

tearing my hair because i replace the starter in my fieats and the new one has the same problem as the old one and now ive changed the sump and the crankshaft seal leaks

Not a good day for me and mechanics

Loose contact on or in the fuel relay most likely. Could also be the wiring but usually it's the relay.

id say that terminal on the fuel pump relay has a dry solder joint ,wiggle the connections on the silver relay they should be all solid if they wiggle about,id say the relay mine does it all the time just get the soldering iron out and its fine again for ages

Evening guys, cheers for all the comments.

ive given it another go at starting without the shelf in and again it wouldnt start so im deffo thinking that its down to iffy wiring, the silver relay box is it hard to crack open and check it at all? never done this so what can i expect when i do?

to be honest though some of the wiring is shocking and wouldnt susprise we in the least if its shorting somewhere. ive got two weeks off in novemeber though so i think ill do the work then but if its dry this weekend ill start on the relay.

Might invest in a full re wire though so i know its all solid. ho hum

ill keep updating till its sorted guys, thanks again

Pete

Have you checked the plug the relay goes on? the wires pop in and out of the relay holder, possible one has came out slightly and not making good contact with the relay pin.

check under the dash for any wires near where the cubby tray goes, would it touch anything?
Is it possible theirs a wire coming from the ignition switch beside the barell and the cubby tray is disturbing it/rubbed through it?

jus thinking of possibility's here

you could try a temporary live/earth from the battery to the fuel pump, and see if it starts, that way you can eliminate everything else bar the fuel pump/fuel pump relay/fuel pump wiring etc

Quick question chaps

The black box that sits next to the silver relay under the dash, is that part of the system as that still clicks when the ignition is turned on, even when the pump doesnt prime. if so the fault is after the boxes and eith the pump itself is not playing the game or the wiring is knacked.

Any ideas?

dark now so i cant really keep working on it its a pisser only having an hour or so per night to work on it.

on the upside i had a really nice steak pie for tea

Bridge out terminals 87 and 30 on the relay and see if the pump runs. If it doesn't, check the 25 amp fuse between the 2 rows of fuses to the left of the fuse box (looking back down the car).

If it does run when you bridge out the terminals, you either have a dodgy relay or a deeper underlying fault.

Thats the plan Dave, ive got a job interview on tommorow (16 days holiday left and im pulling a sickie ) with LRT so if i get that ill start in january and then ill have a lot more money to spend on it, once its de rusted (which admitedly is bloody minimal) im hoping to have a zetec in it by the time the show season kicks in or at least next years nat day.

Then we'll go a hunting

I should have taken some pics actually if this happens alot.

Right dave, when you open the relay (i used a sharp knife and a pair of long nose pliers so not to damage the casing) you should already be able to feel which terminal is loose on mines the spade nearest the large base pcb was the one to solder. i did them all with a good dose so it lasts a while.

the use your long nose pliers to close the case again, might want to use a smattering of insulating tape just to keep the damp out.

now i need a drivers side door pin and a sidelight bulb holder
