Default 2litre Zetec better than an RST engine in a modern Escort?

Just wondering what people think seeing as I got a pretty clear idea of people's views on buying a mk5 with an RST engine last night

I've seen a mk6 I quite like. Should be an easy conversion right? Not too taxing.

Buy the car, buy the engine, do some stuff to the engine over a couple/few months than whack it in? What's it take to get a nice 170-180bhp out of a 2.0 Zetec, and which are the best Zetecs to use?

I was thinking along the lines of Cams, Exhaust, TBs, Chip etc? Obviously wouldn't wanna spend silly money so £1k a piece TBs are a no no.

NO NEGATIVE SHIT PLEASE!

Lol, it isnt cheap to get 170 bhp from a Zetec-E normailly aspirated.

Loads of peeps say it is but in practise it never quite works out

I'd hunt for an ST170 engine myself with manifolds etc and save urself the headache and expense

Get a Zetec E engine from a pre 97 mondy.

Don't use a blacktop (thay are pants) unless you are going ST170.

that is good advice from Matt.

modifying engines, particulalrly n/a ones is a waste of money at your age. there's the increased fuel consumption, insurance etc, and for what? a little bit more speed. why not just buy a faster car in the first place? you'll realise all that one day when you're old and wise like me

For 170bhp out of a 2.0 zetec, you'd need a good throttle body kit, plus 4-2-1 manifold and full exhaust after that. That alone is £3k mate.

Personally, I think you should buy the escort, fit the 2.0, and then see if you need more power.

All the info is available on Escort Evo, and you can use all the standard Ford parts, so no nasty chipped 1.8 / 1.6 ecus to correct the fueling

What BMW do you have at the moment? The escort will be faster than a 320i

Well for TB's you need new managment, and mapping. You will need cams too. Fuel pump etc?

I said throttle body kit, like an Omex / Jenvey kit, or a Weber Alpha kit

Kits come complete with all the management, and some hotter cams. Standard fuel pump is used.

I budgeted £500 for a complete mapping session. £2k kit... £500 mapping... £300 manifold... £200 is not enough for other little bits and pieces, but that's how I arrived at £3k

Cool.

Now getting na power needs revs so i reckon a nice set of arp rod bolts is needed at least too. Verniers for the cams etc Not trying to be a dick but it will all add up doing it properly and reliably in all honesty. Been there and done it and it's nowhere near as good an engine for n/a modding as a 1.6 zetec-se

Forget it then, a lot more money than I thought.

I've got a 325 E36.

I miss my old Escort and would like another but I want a bit of power. If I'm not getting one with any power then I may as well buy a Golf GTi mk2 or mk3 for the time being.

vr6 might satisfy your lust for power and your budget, even if it handles like a wayward boat anchor

if you want to do it on a budget.. use bike throttle bodies and something like megasquirt. dead cheap that way.

mine makes 172 on carbs, but if you're putting it in a modern car the chances of you getting anywhere near emissions regs i would imagine are slim, plus the carbs would cost more than the bike TBs and megasquirt is just pennies.

And that spec there (inc. your extra bits) is pretty much exactly what my 1.8 zetec was, bar a well modded head.

Do the 1.6 SEs respond well to tuning? I assume you mean fairly light tuning, not doubling the power?
