B&M quickshift does away with all the standard linkage rubbish so if your sure it is your linkage thats playing up then yes it would.

B&M is about £180 from APT

What about the catch for the reverse gear? Will the B&M quickshift also work with the older boxes which where built before '86?

Try the standard Puma shifter. It's awesome, around 80£ new and complete and fits quite easily. A popular mod with RSTs.

am i right in saying that the quick shift replaces the linkage and bushes at the drivers end but the gear box end bushes could be shagged?

Default linkage

there is nothing on the gearbox side of the linkage, there is a gearchange stabalizer bar which only has a plastic washer and then there is the main selector rod which can only be adjusted for desired gear selection smoothness and tightened I supose doing the mod on the link above may be worthwhile but i found just buying original ford replacement parts for the linkage done the world of good. I now use the b&m quickshift which is great.

Default gear linkage

you have to drop the old stick and linkage out and just replace a couple of plastic bushes inside the mechanism, so it has to come off the car but this aint difficult. Make sure you take it apart very slowly so nothing breaks then you can see how to put the new bits in. Be sure to adjust the linkage correctly on refitting because that is the most important thing.
