As some of you may know, I went away to sea on Monday to start my new job on a much smaller type of ship.

Well, got there to find a converted fishing boat My cabin was tiny, it stank, and had fleas................. Tried cleaning up, with no real success as I was being very sick due to the calm weather rolling the 'ship' 45 degrees at a time... Never been seasick in the 6 years I've worked at sea, made up for it in the last 3 days.

To make things worse, the thing was fucked. Gearbox/clutch gave up about 10 hours out to sea, leaving us with no propulsion. Came back to Aberdeen using the retractable thruster, only took 48 hours. Had no working fire pump, the compressor exploded, and it was generally pish.

So I said to the Chief Engineer, (I was the 2nd engineer) that I wouldn't be staying and would it be possible to get me off? 2 hours later I'm shoved off the ship into a cold wet aberdeen where I stood for 3 hours while my WONDERFUL g/f drove 200 miles to come rescue me. (it was 11pm btw)

So, there end my brief association with that shipping company, and now back on the hunt for a job.....

So, anyone need an engineer? I'm currently applying for EVERYTHING, Halfords, Tyre Fitting places, you name it! Someone get me a job!

Cheers guys! I didn't really know what to expect, as I've been on LARGE tankers and cruise ships.

This thing was a deathtrap though............ I'm currenlt applying to everything. Mind you, the job as a bus mechanic is sounding promising.

 

It's a device to assist manouvering. It's basically a propellor attatched to a vertical shaft that is lowered down through the hull. You can rotate it through 30 degrees to give propulsion wherever you need it. Fucking useless as a main propulsion system though. 2 knots....

Cheers Dave! Shes a wee star for coming up to get me in the wee hours. We got home at 4am, she was up again at 7 for work!!!

And they never said in the 'small' print that the ship was a pile of shit!
