Default amal valves, been advised to fit a hi/low boost switch

had my new cossie to Well Lane turbos on saturday, just for basic tune up & R/R.

made 262bhp. they said it was spot on but the boost isn't holding, peaks at 16psi then holds 10psi, and slowly creaps back up to 12psi by the time you get to the rev limiter.

well lane said it was probably just the wiring from the ECu to the amal valve (being old) and the its not sending pulses as fast?

they told me to wire up a high loq boost switch to over come the problem?

does that sound right?

thanks lads

If the wiring or amal connector is old/faulty and causing intermittent (spelling?) problems you will notice it by the pretty violent cut outs.

For example if its boosting 16psi and the amal valve shuts off it will go back to the preload set boost instantly and that aint so pleasant. On my cossie it felt like a brick wall. Seems strange they says this because of the boost fading. If you swith the amal valve off it will drop rapidly.

i would think it would not make a difference as im sure the high low boost switch is just a wire going from earth to swich to pin 11 on the ecu if this is the case when it is swiched off for full boost there will be no difference....

unless he means an in car adjustable boot controller which will work off the pipe work and bypass the amelvalve......

What actuator do got on it, sound more like its aint strong enough to hold the boost, fading back and then picking up again.

thanks lads

andreas - thats what i thought it would be, but they said the actuator is fine, not sure what it is but it has a turbo technics sticker on it

the way Well Lane told me to wire up the hi/low boost switch was direct to the amal valve wiring

one wire going to earth, one wiring going to the green/brown wire on the amal valve (i thought this sounded really wierd)

that will just turn the amal valve on and off, ignore there advice IMO and have it setup by PRO's!!! if it's got stage 1 chip then it should hold about a bar no problem at all

hmmm, i have no faith in well lane.

Get a NEW -31 actuator, take it somewhere decent for a setup.

The actuator when its on the car, should be half a hole out on the arm for the wastegate iirc, this is the preload.

Ie when you offer the actuator up to the turbo and wastegate, you should be able to see half of the hole on the rod end it self, as the wastegate arm should be half visible.

man, thats a hard thing to describe this early in the morning.

Half a hole of pre-load on the acutator is correct. Jets in the amal valve are then used to bring the boost up. Best option is to junk the amal valve and get a decetn after market boost controller

why rich?

Why not let the ECU control the boost, rather than some 3rd party item?

a std ecu doesn't control the boost - it only allows it to be cut from one for 'safety'

If Well Lane have told you your wiring is old and thats the problem, why have they told you to wire a high & low boost switch into the original wiring

If anything replace the 2 wires to the amal valve as far as you can cut them back & get a new actuator like Mike said.

Gotta love Well Lane

well lane = set of cocks

I remember, a few years ago, was wathing a rolling road session, some lad with a cossie was having a "setup". Blokey on the RR was pissing about with the fuel pressure reg and then doing more power runs

It ended in tears with the engine going pop at full tilt while in 4th.

the RR operator (if you can call them that ) got out and said "shift it, its fucked"

I will never take a car to Well Lane - took a car there once, it had more power before they "tuned" it.

good lad cawood, well tbh, a new -31 is deffinately something you will require without a shadow of a doubt.

thanks, yeah to TBH i dont like well lane, since i just got the cossie i wanted a quick "check over"

yeah mike, told em u recommended me

i thought fook it see if NMS can fit me in now for the gunship (this was saturday morning)

so i rang well lane and cancelled with them (told em i ad my tyres slashed)

rang NMS up asked if i could pop down, was told it wasn't as simple as that as it needed live mapping, etc

so i had to ring well lane back again and uncancell my R/R with them

just never ask them to fit a GRS for you

mike - told him i'd ring him back this week to arrange a date as its not just a "drop your car in for an hour job"

they better not bump the price up now cos you recommended me!

yeah he mentioned a bit of a waiting list, 3 weeks about lol, not bad tho cos it give me time to save up

considering the gunship gives stage 3 performance, is it worth the extra out lay?

NMS said in perfect conditions it would give around 300bhp, but in stage 3 340bhp?

power isnt everything, its about drivability as well.

its up to you, extra costs of an RS500 cooler, 3 bar map sensor and green injectors..

Puts Karls gunship conversion on...it'll be the best money you will spend. I loved mine when it was on the gunship.

No one's mentioned the amal valve jetting, which when done properly allows peak / held boost to what the tuner wants (dependant on turbo - e.g. some just cannot hold certain boost higher up the rev' range depending on engine spec' etc.)

As said above, wiring up a high/low switch won't cure this problem.
