Are they a good or bad idea ?
I know Ford put them on as standard but has anyone that runs without one actually snapped a belt due to a stone etc ?
I have a friend that races a pinto powered outlaw on gravel and he wont use one. He reckons the chance of debris damaging the belt is greater with one on as if anything does get around the cover it flys around inside until it does do some damage. Without the cover the chances are the debris will pass through and not cause a problem.
If the cossie one was a good fit I would deffo fit it, but certain parts look quite exposed anyhow, I guess it may only be there to keep fingers out of moving parts
What do you think / do ?
Cheers,
WD

it's there for a reason, just because you don't know anyone who's had an engine trashed because of it doesn't mean it's not going to happen
it's like saying you don't know anyone who's been trampled to death by an elephant, but you know it happens on the odd occasion

Im in two minds here, i say on because i nearly got my finger tore of when i touched the cam pulley while the engine was running
8 stiches late and no nail
But then i say of because i noticed my cam pulley bolt was loose a few months later, while doing some cleaning ( should`ve been tight tho, my fault)
so then i would have to say its up to yourself, depends how lucky you feel or dont feel

Lets be realistic here chaps, its better to be safe than sorry, and I have seen them in an array of orientations too, chrome, carbon fibre, anodised etc so it will look good which ever you chose.

just from my own experience from a good few years of road cars and rally cars, I have never seen belt damage on exposed belts - obviously it is possible and somewhere it will have happened. However ironically I have seen the results of a debris that got INSIDE a fitted cover
We took the cover off to find reinforcing threads hanging out of the belt all the way round and had obviously been like it some time.
At least if the cover is off you will see any damage very quickly, rather than in 30K miles time when it's time to check the belt as in our case...
It's unlikely that a small stone or whatever will actually break the belt, it will punch a hole in it possibly, but if you see the damage you can do something about it..
I guess I'm saying it's unlikely to make much odds either way, but if anything does happen to the belt (including it goes slack or whatever) you will get to see it quickly with the cover off.

Smudge
i lost an engine by not having a cam belt cover fitted.
i dont know why but the bolt that holds the alternator on decided to shear.
consequently the alternator dropped down and the belts went into the cam belt at about 90 mph. bang game over!!!!

Hows this for a story then.
Le Mans this year, the top bolt of my alternator worked loose and flew up into my cambelt. It bent the tensioner and the washer on the bolt got traped underneath my brand new vernier exhaust cam pulley against the thermostat housing. Resulted in a snapped belt, compeletly ruined exhaust cam pulley, a lump out of the inlet pulley and a bent tensioner. This was with the cambelt cover ON. If i hadnt been running the car with the cover on then the bolt would have just fallen harmlesley onto the floor, but because the bolt and washer had no where to go it got trapped in the cambelt and this is the result. i now have no compression on cylinder 2,3 and 4, am going to have to buy new vernier pulleys and see what valves have been bent. I will always run a cambelt cover even though it helped towards such nasty damage on my cossie.
Bling bling verniers or not you should always run one. If you want your pulleys on show then buy the spec r cambelt cover with the cut-outs at the top so the pulleys cam be seen.
