Cam question - Chip maybe?!?!?
MAYBE A QUESTION FOR CHIP.....................
Want to strip off the sump tomorrow, so i can start cleaning the block etc ready for a lick of paint.
One question!
I have one cam that has been removed thus leaving the tappets exposed (dont worry the cam covers on!) but i'm worried about turning the engine over on the stand like this.
I dont want to end up with the tappets falling out & getting mixed up.
Drama queen i know!
But i'd rather ask stupid questions than stick posts up saying i've fucked it!

All i have in my head is water mate!
if the cam is removed, all valves on that side will be closed so nothing to worry about
the tappets cannot go anywhere anyway.
and it wouldn't matter if they were mixed up in my experience

I was reading this viewing it the same way as ForeignRS, wondering why turning the engine over would matter, lol
Just take them out and keep them in order.
Im really not convinced by the arguments against using a very weak magnet on them though TBH, ive done it so many times in the past with other engines and not had a problem, but a valve grinding stick tends to be my weapon of choice just in case there is some truth in the paranoia.

would help if he could speak proper english wouldn't it?
as said, it doesn't matter if they get mixed around unless the head is extremely worn so just take them out with a suction tool (the type normally used to grind in valves)

the reason that you don't use a magent is because if you do, you will magnetise the follower surface. that will then hold onto any particles floating about that will get between the follower and the cam lobe where you have very high pressures and a thin oil film and the cam lobes will wear very quickly
The thoery with the magnet being a problem is that you magnetise and followers and therefore in the future any tiny bits of swarf in the oil that go through them will be attracted to them and stay there, thus causing problems with their operation.
