megasquirt on rst or should i go with cossy bits +ecu
here`s the crack i`m fittin efi/webber management to my s1, now i`ve been hearing a lot of good things about megasquirt.
i`ve got all cossie sensors loom and ecu, aswell as hybrid dizzy and four lug pulley. i was thinkin of gettin jano to sort me a base map but his conversions use different triggers etc so i aint sure on whether to go for it.
with the mega squirt system i can have coil pack ignition and more for the price i can sell all the unwanted stuff off the webber.
plus the pectel board and map form jano is another 200 quid (on a budget lol). with no guarantee it will truly suit my engine??
any ideas guys i`m at a bit of a crossroads without a map.
cheers.

hi jano, i think i`ll probably go for the base map to be honest i`ve spent a lot of time and money to get all the webber bits on my car, cant see the point of taking them off. just want it running now so seems yhe easier and quicker option.
just one more thing. with the webber marrelli if i want say 20 odd psi max boost will the ecu automatically adjust fuelling etc if i lower it via my bleed valve via the map sensor.
cheers dude.

The boost is not the issue.
If a chip has been mapped to say 24psi and u only run 18psi the ecu will only supply the right amount of fuel for 18psi.
If you turn the boost up the ECU will control the fuel to allow for more boost.

Jano

flax im in the same boat as you, im about to convert my MFI cabby over to FRST stuff, but after reading about MegaSquirt i am very tempted to have a go.....i am also on a budget.....
From what people say i gather MegaSquirt is supposed to be the best thing around for the price, but if you can afford more then im sure what Jano has to offer will be better, but obviously you need a deeper pocket.
Just don't forget though one of the nice things about MegaSquirt is being able to plug it into your laptop and Map it yourself, if you want to that is

Andy, you say about using a laptop to map it etc..
Wouldn't you rather someone with experiance who knows what they are doing get the most out of your engine, without causing any damage and leaving it safe within limits.
The cost for this from a TOP Tuner is around Ł100 why would you ever need a laptop... to look pretty on your dash?
If you wanted a laptop its still easy to do with weber as it is now!
However:-
In the next few months alot of changes will be happening with the weber ECU's allowing visual changes and an interface with a laptop.
If you are already running on a Weber system i.e the setup which i use or similar you will be able to upgrade to use the laptop and adjust what you like to your content or untill you blow your lump

The parts needed for any EFi conversion will be the same.
I.e
TPS
CPS
ECU
LOOM
EFi Inlet
Fuel Rail
ETC ETC ETC
The FACT is that you will pay a little extra for a better part if using a weber system.
For example
FRST ECU Ł100 Cosworth ECU Ł100
FRST Loom Ł75 Cosworth Loom Ł80
FRST Throttle body Ł20 Cosworth Ł40
As you can see from the price guide above that overall the Weber Cosworth setup will cost a little extra but its well worth it when you get a system which is 100% EVERY time and can be setup/mapped anywhere in the country by many TOP well know tuners.
Hope this helps you understand that budget does not always get you what you expect.

Well.....obviously the whole mapping thing is also part of decision. Hands up in the air i know nothing about mapping......i realise there is the potential for me to get it wrong. But im also quite keen to learn.....
Lol, no im not wanting to drive around with my laptop on display
already got the laptop, just appealed to me the fact you could map it from home, but then i didn't know you could do that with Weber.
I'm at a point at the moment where i don't know which way to turn, the one thing i do know is the MFI HAS TO GO.......
To be honest with the engine being such low mileage and also still be near on standard at present i'll probably put the FRST OFAB on to get it running reliably and then decide the next step, i got the stuff very cheap and can easily make the money back.
Can you say anymore about the changes to come? I presume the majority of management systems can be mapped at home if need be then?
Cheers

Now you lay the prices down i see what you mean, however the FRST sensors are completely different to the Weber items needed aren't they? And i am also constantly thinking about the limited availibility for mapping of the FRST ECU and so forth.......
Decisions
The cost for you to Re-Flash a Superchip will be more than what it costs for a decent map on weber
But yes the money you have paid for the FRST is nothing, but not everyone has that luck when finding the management system.
As for the weber sensors you are correct as in they will cost a little more.
For example:-
TPS FRST Ł10 Weber Ł30
CPS FRST Ł10 Weber Ł15
ISCV Ł30 Weber Ł40
Again you can see that the difference is cost is not that much when comparing what you get for your money.
Weber sensors are used by the best system's all over the world like Pectel for example.
Hope this helps.

like i say i got all the webber parts its just getting it set up i toyed with the mega squirt cuz i`m a vehicle technician and wnted to play with the mapping.
now i`m sick of looking at it on my drive and want to give it a thrashing.lol
jano mate i`ll be in touch about base map hopefully in next couple o weeks, gotta raise some funds, and thanks again matey.

Well ill have a think about it all, i probably will put the FRST stuff on for time being just so i can get rid of that shocking MFI.
Nothing is ever simple
