Default Cossie noisey rear end most likely cause?

Whilst driving up the M6 to Cumbria and back over the weekend i noticed a problem with the Saff. The engine that i built didn't miss a beat although the clutch is shite Anyway the main problem was at speeds of over a ton (allegedly ) a loud droning weird noise accompanied with a vibration would start and get worse the quicker the car was going The diff is a bit noisy even at urban speeds but this feels more like something badly out of balance at the rear? Its not the wheels as it does it with both sets on! When i 1st put the car on the road i noticed a bit of black gunge on my passenger side rear wheel and traced it to grease from a loose driveshaft to hub on that side. This is now tight and nothing else is loose. What i am thinking is that that loose driveshaft could have possibly fooked the wheel bearing on that side???
Any thoughts please fella's as i'm doing the diff at the end of the week and would like to sort everything in one hit

I'd go with wheel bearing if the shaft was loose, even tho it's tight it could be worn for obvious reasons. However i would of thought it'd be noisey from a lower speed than a ton?

I had the exact same symptons this on mine and it turned out the rear heels were buckled.

Check the diff also.

It did it with another set of wheels on it though mate at exactly the same sort of speeds I know for a fact the wheels aren't buckled so they are out of the frame!
Can a diff be so badly worn that it causes major vibes through a car at speed???

start at the cheapest m8 change the wheel bearing, failing that drop the diff(not on your face) as this can cause a vibration/rumble while on the move!

Spadge - i havent driven mine for a while, but when I do I will let you know if i hear the noise after 100 mph.

I know when I first bought it, it did this and then changed wheels and problem seemed to have been solved.

Defo vibrated and noisey after 100mph.

The diff has not been changed since I have had the car as im currently waiting for it to give up the ghost but it just keeps on going

Hi mate
(I'll go look in a minute before you ask )
I'm changing the diff on Friday anyway but just wanted to hear if anyone had experienced this before as unless i run the rear wheels up to speed on a couple of jacks it may be a tad difficult to diagnose it at a standstill

i would go for bearing to start with too.

i guess if its at high speed you wont detect any play with it jacked up.

and i dont suppose you got a stephescope (sp) to listen to it while slowly rotating the wheel lol

Hi Spadge

That does sound like the crownwheel is coming lose in the diff

as it get noise and starts to vibrate badly before it breaks

do no harm to fit new rear bearings as you are changing the diff soon anyway.

drop the lot, strip it down and polybush the lot too while you are at it.
